buying guide pants

pair up with
the perfect fit.

Finding the perfect pants starts with two easy insights: What’s your body type, and where do you like your waistband to sit?

I.D. your body type.

  • straight.
  • check out fits 2, 3 & 6

  • Straight figures have fewer curves from waist to hip. Pants with a waistband that rests lower on the hips flatter your figure without being too tight. A snug—but not tight—fit through the hips and thighs creates a sleek silhouette.

  • semi-curvy.
  • check out fit 1

  • With your contoured waist, most pants will complement your figure, but a truly great fit will accentuate your shape in all the right ways.

  • curvy.
  • check out fits 4 & 5

  • Curvy figures are shapely with a smaller waist and fuller hips and thighs. The ideal pants will fit your waist without gapping in front or pulling in back, and give you room to move in the hips and thighs.

the lowdown on rise.

Choose a rise and style that flatter your body type and fit your sense of style.

  • just below the waist.

  • Just below the waist sits 1.5-2.5" below the narrowest part of your waist.

  • mid-waist.

  • Mid-waist styles sit 2-3.5" below the narrowest part of your waist.

  • low-waist.

  • Low-waist styles (sometimes referred to as "low rise") sit 3.5-4" below your waist.

  • very low-waist.

  • These are the lowest of the low-rise waistbands, sitting 4" or more below your waist.

  • flatter your figure.

  • embrace your curves.

  • Look for pants that are narrower at the waist and contoured through the hips and thighs. These styles will help you show off your figure and won't gap at the waist. Go ahead, tuck in your shirts for a clean, tailored look.

  • round out straighter lines.

  • Low-rise styles can add shape to straighter and athletic figures. There's a whole range for how low these waistbands can go, so try on different fits to find your favorite.

  • slim your waist.

  • Muffin tops are for bakeries, not waistlines. To create the appearance of a slimmer middle, avoid lower rises. Choose pants that sit mid-waist.

  • pantastic hem tips.

  • Hemlines should hover about
1" from the floor and just above your instep. But what if you wear shoes with different heel heights? Consider buying two pairs of your favorite pants and hemming one for heels and one for flats.
