The GeoMate Jr. is a simple and fun device to get started with geocaching (and to get the kids out of the house). After inserting 2 AAA batteries, you simply turn on the device (presumably in an area where caches may be hidden) and the GeoMate Jr. will connect with satellites and then give you the distance and the direction to the closest cache from the point of power-on. After you find your first cache, you can mark it as "found" and then either go to the next closest cache from wher e you first turned the GeoMate Jr. on, or you can power-off and back on again to find the next closest cache from your current location. If you mark a cache as "found" on the Geomate Jr., you can go back later and see the cache "ID" for your found caches. With this ID you can log your finds on geocaching dot com. The GeoMate also lets you set a "Home" location if you want to find your way back to a certain point (like your car in a large parking lot!). After reading the product quick-guide and down-loading and reading the extended user-guide from Apisphere, the controls were easy to use. The Geomate Jr. seems accurate to within 3-6 ft and the signal was good out in the open, under tree cover, and even in my vehicle between caches. The product itself is well built (Made in the USA!) and comfortable to handle. It also comes with a convenient lanyard. You will need the optional update cable (sold separately) if you want to load the latest caches that have been placed in your area since the date your Geomate Jr. was manufactured. But geocaching has been around long enough now that there are plenty of caches that show up in the area where I live, even without updates.

We got into geocaching to get my techie kids outdoors, since I love to hike. Besides being the most affordable, we decided on the Geomate because it doesn't require me to do anything but throw it in the backpack before we go- I'm sure I would not have bothered otherwise on what turned out to be some great geocaching adventures. I don't have to look up or program in any coordinates for where we plan to be. It was the only one the comes preloaded with caches- so we actually didn't even open the p ackage until we got where we were going the first time and my son had it figured out in 5 minutes and is crazy for it- a live-action video game. My daughter makes us pull over the car and jump out if caches are nearby on road trips, hoping for a cache with really good "swag"- so we had to buy a second one. It has really improved their willingness to go sightseeing on vacation since there are always a ton of caches near anything interesting. The lanyard ring is the best- I don't have to worry about it getting lost. We don't miss a map- it seems more about exploring to me when you aren't just following a GPS map like you have in the car.

I have got to say - I spent an entire day in the park with a few kids and a handful of adults Geocaching, one of the best parts about this experience was the preloaded Geomate.jrs - this made the adventure easy and they just worked!2 big thumbs UP! the kids are hooked.

This is such a great family activity. I tried finding geocaches before with hand held GPS devices. That took a lot of planning and found it challenging to find the geocaches. With this item we could find all the geocaches in a park.

So much fun!

We picked up a Geomate.jr as a birthday present for my 12 year old daughter. She's a gadget geek and reeeeeeeeeeely loves her iPod, Mac and Blackberry. We end up bickering a lot about how little time she spends outdoors. The GPS on her Blackberry and in her Mom's Audi had already introduced her to the concept of GPS navigation, so a cool "gadget" that enabled her to play a GPS game AND get outdoors seemed like a perfect combo. She's only spent a few hours geocaching so far it's been a really great experience. Amazingly, even though we live downtown, there are at least two dozen caches within a 20 minute walk of our home --- that's pretty cool. While the Geomate doesn't have maps like some of the expensive GPS units, my daughter really loves how the device helps her navigate to the cache. She says it's kind of like a "high tech compass."In general we're really impressed with the Geomate.jr. The only thing we'd like to see is a Mac version for the update kit. My daughter hates having to boot into Windows on her Mac -- says it make her feel cheap and dirty.
