We currently have a one year old and we installed this gate at the top of our basement stairs when she started to crawl. It is very sturdy. We love the fact that it swings both direction and it lifts off of the permanent hinges very easily when we need it out of the way. It is easy to open and close and overall a great gate!

This is the 3rd gate we purchased for the top of our stairs, I honestly did start to feel like Goldie Locks of the baby gates, the first was to small the second was too tall and the 3rd one was just right. Opens easily enough, had to carry my sleeping 8 mo. old up to bed the other night and the gate was latched. Haveing to open it didn't disturb her sleep! I do notice that sometime the bottom doesn't get into the locking bracket, just need to watch it is all. Overall great gate!!!

I bought this product for many reasons. 1) The price, 2) It actually screws into the wall so is supposed to be good for the top of the stairs, 3) It has a wide opening, 4) Unlike a lot of the other other gates, it doesn't have a bar that stays on the ground - I was afraid I'd trip over that, 5) It got lots of great reviews. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for. I can't believe all the good reviews this product received. I read lots of the reviews before I purchased this product (including th e bad ones). Overall this product has a 4 1/2 star rating with almost 100 reviews. I don't know why. This is the worst product I've ever seen. The instructions are terrible. My husband is very handy, so he was able to install it anyway, but the instructions weren't helpful. He broke 3 screws in a row while installing it. I mean, the head of the screws broke right off! How is that a safe, high quality item? He used our own screws to put it up. Once installed it just didn't live up to all the hype. It does open easily with one hand, but that's the only good thing I have to say about it. In order to close it, you have to line up the bottom rail so that it fits into the bracket. This is a royal pain in the butt and I can almost never do this on the first try. I don't know if this has to do with the fact that our stair opening is wide, so this thing is almost fully expanded, but it is really difficult to close. And when I wiggle it around to try to close it, the hinges on the side that is attached to the wall often come out of the brackets. This just doesn't seem safe. I'm sure once my son starts walking that he would be able to lift the gate right off the hinges. My husband was going to drill a hole through the hinges and attach them directly to the wall, but I decided to just return this item instead. Hopefully I won't encounter any problems returning this since it's already open. I can't believe Target would even sell such an unsafe and inferior product. I am highly diappointed. Don't waste your money or your time!

I have small energetic dogs and a very wonderful and active one year old grandson. Putting these gates in my doorways has made my life much easier! They keep the dogs confined when I am busy and my grandson off the steps and out of the kitchen while I cook! These gates were simple to mount and open and shut with ease. Only thing we did was use better screws than those provided in the package. I love these gates!

This is a fabulous gate for the top of the stairs. We have two other gates on our first floor. Both of which we like, but both also have that bar across the bottom over which one must step to get through the gate. That feature makes it completely unsafe and illogical for the top of the stairs as it's too easy for one to trip.Another feature is that it is built so that it only swings one way - so it's obvious when installing that it needs to swing over the floor and not over the steps because if it opens out over the steps, one needs to back down the steps for it to open and then go up the steps again to close it. Swinging open over the floor = safety. It's not difficult to open one-handed - you just need to pay attention to what you're doing when you close it. I've noticed that it can be closed without the bottom rung being put securely in the holder. This can put pressure on the top, making it difficult to open. However, it shouldn't be closed this way in the first place, making it less safe on the bottom.Logic plays a key role - install into a stud and not drywall, for those of you who don't do things like this very often. Keeping your baby safe is of utmost importance - stop and take the time to do things right the first time so you don't figure it out once something bad happens!!

We actually bought two of these. One for the top of the stairs in the house and another for the deck so my son and my dog could play in the back yard without me worrying about them escaping. We have had them for about 5 years and still use the outside one every day. We live in Michigan so the weather is very drastic from season to season; the gate has lasted through blizzard and 90 degree with 90% humidity like a charm. I absolutely recommend it.

We started out as new parents 10 years ago. We searched and searched and tried every gate we could find on display. We picked this one because it is anchored to the wall. The others that were pressure mounted lock and could be taken down by a large toddler. This one really locks you will hear a "click.". Plus its not hard metal so if baby hits it head it's against light wood not metal. The light wood goes with any interior and you could always paint it. We sold all of ours when the ki ds were older but now we have 2 puppies and searched everywhere to buy them again. Finally found here and purchased 4 again this time we will keep for a long time you never know what may come along! We rate it with 5 stars for safety and peace of mind!

I am using this at the bottom of the stairs as a gate to keep the dogs downstairs and it works wonderfully! I love not having to climb over a gate anymore! Installation was a bit of a challenge because we had to drill into a banister but once we got through it it came together quickly! So glad I read the reviews and used that to make my decision on which gate to get.

I purchased this baby gate (along with a bracket that goes around the bannister to prevent drilling into the bannister) for our new house. It works very well and was easy to install. The only difficulty is that my mother-in-law has arthritis and has a little difficulty opening the gate, but since we don't go downstairs much it hasn't been a problem.
