A close-up view of the heavy metal scene in its heyday (maybe too close), Heavy Metal Parking Lot is an underground classic recorded on video in the parking lot of a Judas Priest concert at the Capitol Center in Largo, MD, in 1986. Director John Heyn wandered around the drunken parking lot scene and barely had to do anything other than hold up a microphone and aim the camera. Packs of plastered kids unfurled homemade Judas Priest banners, sang their favorite Judas Priest songs, played air guitar for the camera, and in general, made incredible asses of themselves. The interviews are pretty simplistic. They ask questions like, "Why are you here?" or "What do you guys think of Judas Priest?" So, the filmmakers were fortunate that the crowd that day exuded so much unbridled enthusiasm and were willing to completely lose it in front of the camera. Other than the interviews and images of fans, this short film features a couple of Judas Priest songs on its soundtrack and less than a minute of concert footage at the end to round out this nearly legendary, no-budget hit. An era when feathered hair, leopard skin pants, bandanas, and mullets were the norm, the '80s metal scene is documented in all its infernal glory in Heavy Metal Parking Lot. It's a sort of freak show thrill, as trashed, toothless fans stumble up to the camera and whoop and holler about their love for Judas Priest and heavy metal. They are about as passionate as fans get. Producers Jeffrey Krulik and John Heyn threw together many obscure sequels including Neil Diamond Parking Lot, which is also funny stuff, Heavy Metal Sidewalk, Raver Bathroom, and Harry Potter Parking Lot. But none came close to capturing the spirit of the original, which was a scene the filmmakers happened upon, where all are so wasted and out of control that their modest film idea became a riveting and hilarious cult hit. From the kid in the zebra-striped outfit who grabs the microphone from his friend to declare that punk sucks and belongs on Mars and heavy metal rules, to the shirtless hesher on acid who rhapsodizes about drugs and mumbles, "They should make a ****** that's so big it fits across America and everyone should smoke it," Heavy Metal Parking Lot is nonstop silliness and a thoroughly enjoyable spectacle.
