Released after a decade-long absence -- the longest gap in Sade's discography -- Soldier of Love topped the charts in several countries, effectively prolonging the group's career while introducing a new, darker sound. There's a fatalist depth of heartache conveyed throughout the set. On ?Bring Me Home,? Sade Adu is content in resignation (?Send me to slaughter/Lay me on the railway line?), while on ?The Moon and the Sky,? she projects a bruised and angered bewilderment (?You lay me down and left me for the lions?). The bleakness is tempered with themes of survival and recovery, and a song that is truly sweet (?Babyfather"). Relatable most to those who've experienced solitude created by romantic desertion, this is not your mother's Sade album. Andy Kellman, Rovi

This is truly one of the best collection of songs that I've heard in along time. It is mellow and soothing to the soul. This CD is highly recommended.

Ever since their debut I've been a loyal Sade fan, so when I write of the low points about the new album, I do it out of respect. Soldier Of Love is definitely a project of love for the entire band. With each album Sade released, the project was presented with such a theatrical energy I felt I could get involved with the songs. Sade herself exploded with deep seeded emotion as she belted out the ballads. The more up-tempo tracks were instant classics. Today it seems that the fire has simmered d own to a smolder. That's not saying Soldier Of Love is a bad album, it's just not the emotional thrill ride her previous albums once were. And the party has long dissipated from the R&B tracks. For the new disc, two openers The Moon And The Sky and title track Soldier Of Love are obvious Sade signatures, dramatic and thematic. However I feel these tracks are just a backward glance to the Love Deluxe and Stronger Than Pride era. Each track after that seems to lilt along without a care. They become too carefree and breezy, that they seem like filler or fluff. The impeccable song writing and lyrics are present; the energy is not there to back those lyrics like it should. The new album is a definite step away from the norm for Sade yet the spark has gone out of the flame. I miss the Sade of yesterday. I needed that energy back. I still have love for this new project; for her and her top notch band.

Beautiful and brilliant!

I've heard the criticism about this album and much to my shame I hesitated in purchasing it. I love Sade and decided to make the purchase. I am glad I did. This album is beautiful in the style that we have come to know Sade. The album opens with the strongest song in my opinion with "Moon and Sky" and it took me about 20 minutes to get to the next song because I hit repeat 4 times. The rest of the album follows suit with bar highly set. Soldier of Love hits hard with a strong military feel only to calm you back down with the beautiful Morning Bird. My only complaint is that the album itself is too short with only 10 tracks, but this is no way takes away from the overall quality of this album.
