The godchild of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Natalie Delage Sumter (1782-1841) managed to survive the French Revolution by fleeing to New York City as an 11-year-old. Eight years later she met and fell in love with a Southern gentleman, Thomas Sumter, Jr., on the return voyage to France. Eventually, she found herself the mistress of a vast South Carolina plantation--wife of a diplomat with duties that took the couple on an extended voyage to the court of Portugal in Brazil. This biography chronicles her adventures.
