Janey Smith keeps a journal of her dreams and experiences as she is rejected by her father, kidnapped by thieves, and sold into prostitution
Banned as ****** in Germany, accused of being plagiarized in the U.K., Kathy Acker's most notorious novel, BLOOD AND GUTS IN HIGH SCHOOL, is a post-punk feminist cult classic. Using a "cut-up" technique reminiscent of William Burroughs, Acker freely melds stream-of-consciousness rants, dreams, fabulist situations, and dirty illustrations to tell the story of Janey, a globe-trotting nymphomaniac. The story kicks off when Janey is 10 years old and in a sexual relationship with her father in Mexico. When he find another lover, she moves to New York and joins a gang, the Scorpions. After all the Scorpions but Janey die in a car wreck, she is kidnapped by a Persian slave trader and forced into prostitution. Finally, she travels to Tangiers where she becomes the lover of the French writer Jean Genet. Hallucinatory, perverse, electric, and intimate, BLOOD AND GUTS IN HIGH SCHOOL has not lost any of its kinetic power since its publication in 1984, and will continue to disturb and fascinate as long as sex, power, and freedom remain important issues for women in the world.
