Isabel and her five-year-old sister Ruth are slaves owned by a Loyalist couple living in New York City in this novel set during the Revolutionary War. Dismayed by the conditions of her life, Isabel decides to seek freedom for herself and Ruth by becoming a spy for the rebel armies. However, she soon learns that even those fighting for independence for themselves are not to be trusted when it comes to ensuring the freedom of slaves. This book was named a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award in the Young People's Literature category. A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2008.
