Mackerras (emeritus, international business and Asian studies, Griffith U., Australia) presents a text designed for use in undergraduate-level courses on Chinese history. It introduces Chinese history from the Boxer Rebellion (1900), which precipitated invasion and humiliation at the hands of the world's large powers, and the triumph of the Chinese Communist Revolution (1949). The framework of the text revolves around four basic thematic tensions: revolution, reform, change, and reaction; nationalism and imperialism; modernization and tradition; and foreign impact and internal dynamic. Following a review of the 19th-century background, the text provides a chronological treatment of political and military developments. It then presents chapters discussing the thematic topics of social change, education and the student movement, and literature and theater. Also included are 46 primary source documents and a guide to further reading. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
