Henry James satirizes the coquettishness of young girls and Americans' infatuation with Europe in DAISY MILLER, one of his earliest successes. Daisy travels across the Atlantic with her brother, but in Switzerland sets off on a rollicking, manipulative affair with another American known only as Winterbourne. James tracks the pair as they fall in and out of each other's company while Daisy becomes seduced by the liberties the Southern European lifestyle. Rebuked by Winterbourne and her circle of English and American expatriates, Daisy defiantly rushes to a tragic collapse.
