Maybe it is honest, maybe it is realistic, but there is no doubt that Kia Dupree's novel DAMAGED tells a rough and raw story. Life has not been kind to Camille Logan (or Nectar, as she later calls herself). After her mother got addicted to drugs and her grandmother died, Camille gets sent to live in foster care with the Brinkleys, a family that seems perfect at first-glance. It doesn't take long, however, for Mr. Brinkley to start sexually abusing Camille, keeping her quiet with threats and promises of nice clothes and other presents. But this is just the beginning, and in DAMAGED readers will follow Camille through her difficult teenage years. Dupree never relents, making this a bleak but nevertheless compelling and addictively readable book.
