I thought these deserved a positive review. First, they block about 50-75 percent of the sun AND heat from my west-facing nursery, and that was good enough for us. I was looking for a pale yellow curtain, and these fit the bill. They do not have any type of odor, and don't amplify the sun as other reviewers have stated. The price is PERFECT, and we are very happy with these!
These curtains are so cute! But I bought them for my baby's nursery and once i put them up the whole room smelled like something rotten! I noticed it was the curtains so I washed them and left them soaking overnight with detergent and fabric softener and they came out smelling fine, but once they dried they smelled just as bad! I did a search online thinking it may just be me since I am pregnant, but apparently many many people think the same way. Makes me sad, but these wil l be going back.
The packaging on these drapery panels states "Blackout Curtain" and "Block out over 99 percent of light". I bought several of these in pink for my daughters' room, and they cut the light by less than 30 percent, in my opinion. While my daughters' room does have enormous windows, we have a 3' roof overhang in all directions that already provides significant help in decreasing sunlight. I was shocked to see how poorly these drapes did, in terms of reducing light in the room. If you are looking for draperies that will reduce light, these are not for you. The lined, non-blackout pinch-pleated draperies in an ivory-colored fabric that were on the window before did a better job at reducing incoming light! If you are looking for an inexpensive curtain for decorative effect only, then this may work just fine for you.
after reading so many bad reviews, I decided to check these out in the store instead of purchasing them online. The first thing I check was for smell, other than the plastic smell from the packaging I didn't smell anything bad. and then I actually took one out of the package to check how much light the block. In the store it looked pretty good so I brought them home. They were wrinkly so I put them in the dryer as the instructions stated which worked perfectly. They are now hanging in my daughters room and doing a great job. I would say at least 75 percent blockage of light in a very large bright window.
We've had these curtains in our kids' rooms for a year now. While they don't block out all the light they do a pretty good job, in my opinion. They looked okay out of the package and for the money I felt like we got a decent product. Until I washed them. I followed the instructions but even with washing in cold the plastic backing stuck to itself. When I gently pulled it apart it ripped leaving the curtains looking terrible. Splotchy and uneven in color. Af ter one washing they are ruined. I'm disgusted both with the company and with Target for selling such a shoddy product.
Perhaps I'm the only one that thinks this, but when the word "blackout" is printed on a curtain package, I expect some serious blocking of light. I put these -- yellow -- up briefly in my baby's room and laughed out loud -- bright as day. They may block 99 percent of distant street light at 2 am, but they do nothing about actual light. I noticed in the time they were up a chemical-type smell which alarmed me, too. Honestly, these should be pulled from the shelves.
As other reviewers have said, despite what the packaging says, these curtains don't block any more light than regular heavy curtains. And they smell like wet straw, especially when they start to get warm from the sun. When I washed them according to the label's directions - cold water, gentle cycle, tumble dry low - the coating on the back peeled off in a few places so that there are bright spots showing through. And they still smell like wet straw.
I thought I'd buy these despite all the bad reviews and hoped i'd wouldn't get stuck with what everyone else got. Wishful thinking. But they stink terribly. I even ironed them with dryer sheets underneath as a precaution. They smell once the sun hits them and also tint the room. Too bad. . I really liked these.
I hung these last night and I am thrilled with them this morning. They are a wonderful, pleasing yellow. My husband wanted "sundress yellow curtains," so if you're purchasing these online I would say my monitor shows the color pretty accurately. I would describe them as a soft but vibrant butter yellow. Absolutely without any of the garish tones you'd fear you might get, which is why I ditched Amazon and headed for the stores. They do appear to help keep the heat i n and the cold out. I'm using them over a sliding glass door area and we're in Illinois where it's cold right now. I don't recall reading that these were blackout curtains - but I wouldn't want them to be. They give off a soft ambient glow into the room. When sun hits it directly it makes it feel like spring which is just what I wanted. Also, I accidentally picked up a 63" instead of an 84" panel and the exchange was easy peasy.
As I'm sitting here writing this review, I can see the glowing yellow sun amplified by these light yellow panels. I bought these for the lovely color to compliment my bedding and was excited to get these home and on the windows. The next morning, as the sun came up, it was as if there was a light on in my bedroom. If you are looking for blackout panels, DO NOT PURCHASE these. If I hadn't thrown out the packaging, I would be bringing these back. I have two other sets in different colors, a sage green and a turquoise blue, on other windows in my home and they work fine. These, not so much. I will have to purchase backing to put on these ones to make them true blackout panels. Very disappointed and I'm a loyal Target Guest.
