This volume collects the Civil War letters of Confederate officer Lt. Col. Irvine Walker that were written to his fiancé as he fought with the 10th South Carolina Regular Artillery Regiment in the war's western theater from May 1862 until April 1865. Walker was a member of the generation born in the late 1830s and early 1840s in the middle and upper class, dubbed "the last generation" of the Old South by historian Peter Carmichael, a generation that formed the power behind the secessionist movement.
