At the core of addiction lies a crisis of spirituality, and the self-destructive behavior of an addict can often be read as the path to self-discovery traveled in the opposite direction. The spiritual disciplines of yoga and the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous are both designed to reverse course, through undoing past damage, detoxifying the system, clearing the mind, humbling the ego, and lifting the spirit. It makes sense that the two could be combined with great results. With this idea in mind, yoga instructor Annalisa Cunningham has designed a yoga regime specifically for use with the practice of the the 12 steps. She places specific emphasis on Kundalini poses, which strengthen and activate the lymph nodes (the body's natural detox centers). Her program involves a repeating 28-day cycle of variable poses accompanied by positive, step-centered sayings to repeat while doing yogic breathing. Photos are included depicting each exercise.
