Dawn Of The Dead spawned many an Italian-made ripoff but none of them were ever as awful or crazy as Bruno Mattei's jaw-dropping Hell Of The Living Dead. This film is likely to amuse trash fans in countless ways. The script has dreadful characterizations and dialogue but shows a perverse inventiveness in the types of zombies it comes up with: there's a little boy zombie, a priest zombie, several zombie natives etc. It also comes up with head-scratchingly bizarre plot hooks like having the female reporter strip off her clothing to interact with the natives or a SWAT team member donning a tutu he finds in abandoned house's closet. Director Mattei (working here under the pseudonym Vincent Dawn) enhances the film's accidentally surreal wretchedness by loading it down with jungle stock footage and shamelessly recycling Goblin's Dawn Of The Dead soundtrack for its musical score. The end result isn't scary or convincing in the least but Hell Of The Living Dead is so incredibly, cluelessly bad that it makes perfect fare for cult-flick fans to use on their next "bad movie night."
