Moving from Italy to England, spanning nearly half a century, and bringing together the lives of four disparate characters, this novel offers a fierce and brilliant study of art and its place in our lives. Original
Sarah Hall (THE ELECTRIC MICHELANGELO) combines four stories, stretching across space and time, into a vivid mosaic which depicts the unique and identical ways that people use artistic expression as a means for absorbing and explaining the mysteries of life. Two of the central tales take place in Italy during the 1960s, where an aging painter clings desperately to the vigor of his youth, while one of his art pupils deals with an eye disease which will inevitably render her blind. The painter receives a fawning from another young artist, Peter, which becomes a talisman for his dissipated talent and enthusiasm. Some 40 years later, Peter is a successful painter living in England, where he gets trapped between rocks while scouting for a landscape and spends an endless evening looking back on his life with a mixture of ambiguity and dread. Peter's daughter, Susan, a photographer whose voice forms the structuring frame of the novel, feels herself fading from existence after the violent death of her twin brother. Hall's lyrical meditation on art and life was nominated for the 2009 Man Booker Prize.
