Kurs, a writer, collects the writings of teacher, deaf activist, and retired school administrator Lawrence Newman on topics such as deaf education, bilingual education, residential schools, and teacher training; communication and sign language; and parenting deaf children; as well as miscellaneous columns and poems about deaf life and humorous insights on activism. The writings are from 1948 to 1992. Kurs also includes a biography of Newman, which describes how he became deaf at the age of five, became a teacher, and earned an honorary doctorate from Gallaudet U. There is no index.
