Only at Target, find the January, 2013, Club Pick Into the Darket Corner by Elizabeth Haynes.
Dear Target Guest,
Hello and greetings from my writing shed, which takes up a lot of room in a small back garden in the southeast corner of England. It’s such an honor to be chosen as a Target Club pick, and a great privilege to have the chance to write to you personally to say thank you for reading my book. I hope you enjoy it, and that it keeps you in suspense, scares you a bit, and maybe also gets you to stop and think.
Writing a fictional account of a dangerous relationship wasn’t something I set out to do – I wanted to explore how it felt to not be believed by people you trust, to feel isolated and afraid. At the time I was reading a lot of accounts of violence in the home as part of my job as a police analyst, and the more I read, the more I realized how insidious physical and psychological abuse can be; and more than anything else, how much the perpetrators rely on the way the abused person behaves once they are under control. While they can be isolated from friends and family to begin with, often they isolate themselves further, through shame or fear of reprisals, or because they don’t know who they can really trust, or they simply don’t have the right words to describe what they’re going through. Sometimes it’s easier – and safer – to keep quiet.Although Cathy is fictional, she’s always felt very real to me. There are an appalling number of Cathys in the world who are surviving rather than living because of a relationship that went terribly wrong. The British charity Refuge reports that one in four women will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives, and in the UK alone on average two women are killed every week by a partner or former partner. And despite these figures, what happens remains private, because this just isn’t talked about. So if you take anything from my Cathy’s story, I hope it’s this: be honest about what you see; give it a voice, rather than silence. Trust your instincts. Look out for your friends, and hope they will do the same for you.Thank you very much for reading my book. I’d love to know what you think, so please come and find me on Facebook or Twitter and say hello. It would be great to meet you.Best,Elizabeth Haynes
