Several reviews mention the can opener being broken right after it was purchased. I bet a lot of people don't realize the Kitchen Aid can opener is a top opener. Most manual can openers open cans sideways cutting the lid internally. Kitchen Aid can opener opens cans from the top externally, so the lid can be placed back on the can if need be.

5 STARS FOR AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT -1 STAR FOR INCONSISTENT ASSEMBLYMy wife and I bought this can opener with the understanding that KitchenAid makes great products. And they do, but I think a common mistake is made in the assembly of this product. The cutting wheels is sometimes assembled backwards. This prevents the proper contact to the can, and the can opener won't open the can. It's an easy fix. The cutting wheel is not symmetrical. One side has a bevel near the edge of the blade, and the oth er side is smooth and evenly rounded near the edge of the blade. Proper installation would have the bevel side on the inside, and the round side facing out. Simply loosen the screw holding the blade on. Remove the blade (CAUTION SOMEWHAT SHARP) and identify which side is which, "Bevel" or "Round". Install bevel down/facing in, and round up/facing out. Tighten the screw. HAPPY CAN OPENING!!

I bought this can opener for my mom because I own 3 of these can openers and they work perfectly for years. Maybe KitchenAid recently changed something with this product? It worked well for about 12 uses and now I have to struggle with it to open a can. It is not very safe. One could easily get cut trying to open a can with this opener. The can opener is quite sturdy except for the 'wheel/cutter' on the opener.

I bought the Kitchenaid can opener after trying the cheap one from Target's private label kitchen brand. I thought it would be better at 4 times the price, it only partially lived up to my expectations. It made it through the first 4 regular cans with ease and I was very happy. I used it to open a #10 size can, but it left about a half inch of lid connected to the can that I could not get it to cut. We used it to open a few more regular cans with no problem. I gave up when I tried my 2nd #10 can. It took about 20 minutes to get halfway around and I ended up just prying the lid up with a knife to get my tomatoes. I ended up by a Zyliss elsewhere and this is going back to Target.

I, like most reviewers here, thought that the KitchenAid name meant quality so I sprung for a few more bucks than the generic can opener. I should have saved my money and bought 3 or 4 of the basic one. This is hard to use and in just a short time it is all rusted, expecially inside the crank handle. Shopping for another one now.

I do not recommend this can opener. I thought it would be a quality manual can opener given the brand and price, but it does not pierce cans easily and is not easy to use.

I purchased this can opener 6 months ago. it does not work now. it just destroys the cans when i attempt to open anything. One would think a [$] can opener would last longer then 6 months.

I'm really surprised by the bad reviews on this can opener. I've had it for over a year now and it still opens cans smoothly, with ease. I love it! It's durable and you can't beat the price!

Very difficult to open cans with, not durable, bends easily, piece of junk. Don't let the looks and brand name fool you. I LOVE my kitchen aid mixer, but their smaller gadgets keep breaking and are just trash. Very frustrating because I have to stop and pull up every 1/2 inch or so around the can-most times I can barely get it grab on and dig into the metal to start turning it.

I like good looking kitchen equipment, and don't mind spending more for it. I bought this for looks and ease of opening a can. Simple right. By the time I had opened the 4th can I had, the teeth started slipping on the can. I repositioned the opener, and the same thing. Then, the gear stripped and won't turn the opener at all. I was disappointed in this product, but not KitchenAid as a whole. I will be returning it to Target and will replace it with another brand.
