“This is not…the story of a little old lady in tennis shoes who saw a lot of birds…[A] well-told story that carries you along as if on wings.”—Hartford Courant
At age forty-nine, Phoebe Snetsinger, frustrated homemaker, mother of four, and amateur birdwatcher, was told she was dying of cancer. She decided to spend the little time she had left seeing as many birds as possible around the world. But against all odds, her cancer went into remission, and she ended up taking hundreds of bold, adventurous trips to all seven continents and seeing more species than anyone in history—at great cost to her family and her safety. Life List
is the story of a woman who found refuge from society’s expectations in a dangerous and soul-stirring obsession.
Phoebe Snetsinger had an amazing life. A Swarthmore graduate who went on to become a stereotypical ‘50s housewife, complete with husband, home, four kids, and no career, Snetsinger--in the midst of a quite understandable depression--discovered birdwatching when a friend offered her a look through binoculars at an obscure species of warbler. Snetsinger was hooked, and devoted the rest of her life to watching birds, often traveling to exotic countries, obsessed with adding to her life list, and neglecting her family. Even a cancer diagnosis and the approach of old age failed to deter her. Her obsession ended only when she was killed in an accident in Madagascar at age 68. Olivia Gentile tells this unexpectedly exciting story with insight, compassion, and candor.
