Disney was known for combining his musical cartoon shorts into interesting feature-length anthologies and Melody Time is one of the best. But for the fact that all of the featured segments have musical themes, they vary widely in musical and artistic style. Included are the exciting "Bumble Boogie," with a jazzy version of Rimski-Korsakov's famed "Flight of the Bumblebee," played by Freddy Martin and His Orchestra; the legend of Johnny Appleseed, "Little Toot," the story of a courageous tug-boat narrated by the Andrews Sisters; "Trees," based on Joyce Kilmer's poem and featuring songs by Fred Waring and His Pennsylvanians; "Blame It on the Cowboys," featuring Ethel Smith kicking up her heels with Donald Duck and his Three Caballeros pal Joe Carioca, and cowboy stars Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers in a live-action/animated retelling of the legend of "Pecos Bill." Sandra Brennan, Rovi
It's harvest time, and Donald Duck begins gathering up apples from his vast orchard. Alas, it doesn't take long for Donald to figure out that someone has been biting huge chunks out of his apples--and that someone turns out to be those prankish chipmunts Chip and Dale. Donald fights back by hopping in his helicopter and bombarding them with insect powder. This is but the first volley in a messy battle royale which is punctuated throughout by the famous schoolyard rhyme: "Applecore"/"Baltimore"/"Who's you're friend?"/"Me"--climaxed by an apple splattered in the face of the unlucky "Me". Hal Erickson, Rovi
Narrated by the ubiqitous Sterling Holloway, the cartoon begins as Mr. Stork delivers a new batch of arrivals to a flock of mother sheep. But there's been a mixup at headquarters, and one of the little lambs turns out to be a baby lion named "Lambert". Be that as it may, one of the ewes adopts Lambert as her very own--and as the years go by, he grows into an enormous (and enormously clumsy) lion. Because of his seeming cowardice, his unwillingness to ****** heads with his "brothers", and his weird appearance, Lambert is laughed at and treated as an outcast. All this changes when the flock is threatened by a hungry wolf, whereupon Lambert's lionine instincts go into full "courage" mode. Hal Erickson, Rovi
