Four of my closest neighbors all have the Rubbermaid Gentry mailbox. One new one due to a tree falling recently and taking out a metal mailbox and post so the new one is a Rubbermaid Gentry which is still sold at Menards. The flag on the box does fade due to the sun but the box is durable and doing well. For those who say the boxes don't do well in northern climates then I'd say whoever plows their roads doesn't care about any mailbox and unless it is made of cast iron will be da
maged by a snow plow. The mailbox post is hollow and slides over a 4 x 4" treated post put into the ground. I've had other curb side mailboxes and this one is a winner and large enough to hold some packages that other boxes won't hold.
This mailbox is not suited for Ohio winters.Have fixed 4 times this winter.Whenever a snow plow goes by it is pushed off its base by the force of the snow. The dovetail design and less than durable plastic are design flaws. These units were probably not tested in the northern climates.I see that Rubbermaid does not make mailboxes any more. Could this be the reason?
My family is very pleased with the Gentry Mailbox and Post Combo. Purchased this years ago, love the rear-door feature and durable construction. Recommended this mailbox to my sister-in-law. I enjoy and love all the Rubbermaid products,They're built to last!
I have always used Step 2 mailboxes and they have held up fairly well against the ohio winters and snowplows, but this rubbermaid box is useless if you live anywhere where it is going to be subject to snowplows throwing snow at it. I bought it in the fall of the year and when I put it together I could tell that it was not as sturdy as the step 2, but I put it up anyways. Low and behold the first time the snowplow went down the road the top of my mailbox was in the middle of my driveway. It rips
the screw, yes only one screw, right out of the plastic and their rail system that they use doesn't work at all, poor design. For a company that is based out of northern ohio you would think that they would field test these, obviously not. If you live where you don't have snow it will probably be just fine but if you live where snowplows come down your road you might want to consider a different option.
We have had this mailbox a little over two years. First the flap for the newspaper broke off after approx. 1 year. Now the mailbox magnet latch doesnt work and the door stays open allowing the mail to fall out and of course the newspaper to go flying on windy days. Like I said I am very disappointed. I have tryed to clean the magnet but my only option is to buy another mailbox. I selected this one because we live in the north and I thought it would weather the snow better. I do like the double
door since I live on a busy highway.
This mailbox has been exploded by fireworks placed in the mail area and reassembled. Just today it was run over by a truck tearing it from the post. There is a small hole on the outer layer of the mail box and the rear mail door had one of the hinge pins broken off. It is beginning to show evidence of the abuse and should probably be replaced, but it is still functional.
We live on a very visible corner proprty and have always had an old black plastic mailbox attached to the iron handrails. I installed this new mailbox today next to the front steps. The color matches our outdoor shutters, green roof, and house trim extremely well. The instructions should recommend the use of a power drill or power screwdriver to install the screws. It made the installation so much easier.
Had to return the first one back to the store, the Top would not slide on to the base assembly due to distorted tabs. The second one the tabs were better but still not right. The included instructions in the second box were for a different model of the mail box. It was very hard to assemble the product due to it not fitting together very well .
