BabyCenter Editors' review

What it is
Nervous parents have been known to go in and out of a baby's room dozens of times a night just to check that the baby is still breathing. This monitor may cut down on the nursery runs. Simply put your baby down on this battery-operated sensor pad and it sends real-time information about each breath, movement, and temperature change to the monitor within 100 feet of the pad. There's audio output, so you can hear your infant, too.

It also keeps track of the cumulative hours your baby sleeps in a 24-hour cycle, a feature that sleep-deprived and sleep-obsessed parents might love (or hate). If your child's breathing slows or speeds up alarmingly, the handheld monitor alerts you – loudly. Once you download the free app, you can choose to have alerts and data go straight to your smartphone.

What to watch out for
While it only takes about 60 seconds to set this pricey system up, familiarizing yourself with the monitor settings and cacophony of signals may take a little more study. Many parents say that a regular baby monitor, especially one with a video component, relays much of the same information and gives you the same peace of mind.
