Rated 5 out of 5 by from Listening to the HD598's makes me smile. Lows, mid-range and highs all nicely done and nothing seems over emphasized. Very comfortable and the quality seems very good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best, and made by the best, Sennheiser! The Sennheiser HD598 headphones were bought as a replacement for my 8 year old pair of Sennheiser HD555 headphones. When I bought the HD555, they were my first "audiophile" headphones. Most people want functional headphones, and don't expect to pay much more than $30-50. After-all, sound is sound, right? The headphones blew me away the first time I tried them. I felt as if I had been missing out my entire life. So when it came time to upgrade, naturally I went with the Sennheiser HD598. They are open back headphones, which mean the sound can be head by others around you, so they are generally used for at home listening, or where it won't bother others. Its not like speakers, but the sound can be heard from another person in the room. The open backed design allows the sound to expand. You know you are wearing headphones, yet there is distance to what is being heard. If you are watching a movie for example, and hear cars in the background, the sound will literally sound like its a distance away from you. The design of the inside can direct sound, and it gives a 3D environment to your music, and movies. It is quite an experience, to say the least and brings new life to your music and movies! The sound stage is wide, if for example in a movie a train is rushing by, it will sound way off to you left, almost behind you, and gets closer, until it rushes by and off to the right side, way off to the right. If it is a bustling station, you can close yours eyes and you will swear you are really there. This is the absolute best thing about open backed headphones with sound channeling. Its absolutely stunning. It took me hours of just messing around trying out different sound files on youtube, and movies, I felt like a kid with a new toy. Quality is something these headphones are absolutely known for. I personally will never buy headphones from another company. Sennheiser has the best sound, a sound and an experience I never want to deviate from. They have such a broad selection and type of headphone, everyone will find a good offering from Sennheiser. The quality is top-notch. The velour pads that come with the HD598 are extremely comfortable. You will not have to take these off. I could sleep with them on! Hours and hours can fly by, and your ears will feel comfortable and cool. The headband is wrapped in a nice leather like material. Feels like luxury, looks like luxury! The cord is also detachable, which is very convenient, and allows smaller, longer, or different cables if you want. Most headphones today just force bass on you, because that is what the kids or hipsters want, and think equals quality. People who want natural, clear, crisp sound can look no further. The bass is exactly how it was intended by the artist, or director. Natural sounding as natural sounding can be. The lows, mids and highs are detailed, and clear. You can literally hear every single sound, no crowding of sound at all. Sennheiser really combined their years of expertise, and listening to their customers and packaged it together in these headphones. Frequency response is 12-38,000 Hz. Since the ear cannot hear lower than 20Hz and not higher than 20,000 Hz, when playing these frequencies, the drivers are not pushed to their limits at all! Think of it like a car engine. A smaller engine, running at 100 MPH may be near redline and its pushing its limit whether it stays there or has to keep reaching 100 MPH. It is not good for it, and not efficient. But if a powerful engine is only running half of its RPM's to reach 100 MPH, than its no sweat at all! That is what these drivers do, they can reach the low end and high end of human hearing, and maintain it, without a sweat. You know these will last a long time. I had my previous pair, the HD555 like I said earlier for 8 years. They also have a low impedance, at 50 Ohms, which means they can be driven and sound decent with portable players, or anything just like most regular headphones. That isn't usually seen in such high end headphones. Most high end headphones have such high impedance that they require an amplifier to use. If you have been comparing headphones, companies, reviews, ect. Just take my advice. I have spent tens of hours on forums, review sites and youtube. A lot of people out there review on tech sites without actually knowing what the technologies and specifications mean, or which are important. This can be misleading, and throw you in loops trying to figure out fact from fiction. In the end, if you are unsure whether or not the price difference between common headphones and high end headphones are worth it or just hype, believe me when I say it is under-hyped. You will not believe the quality and sound difference, especially with the open back HD598s, it will change your world, it really will. Just do yourself a favor, and when you first get these, put a mirror in front of you, you will want a memory of one of the most genuine, brightest smiles you've ever had.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great headphones These are as good as headphones, or cans, get unless you spend a great deal more money. The HD 598 reproduce sound very accurately without favoring bass, mid, or treble like most cans do. These are so good they are considered audiophile entry level cans, you would have to spend a great deal more money to get a better can. They have a wide sound stage that gives the listener the impression of listening to a live performance. These are intended to be accurate music orientated cans, not for movies with explosive bass sound, and they will not favor heavy bass music you find in some rap and heavy metal type of music. They excel in traditional jazz, smooth jazz, classical, blues, classic rock, pop, old school R and B, and they really brought out the warmth of vinyl. I gave the HD 598's all 5 stars because sound quality is superb for the price, which is why the value was a 5, and the quality for the money is better then others in this price range, thus overall the 598's are a 5.
