Philadelphia punk rock band American Speedway made their debut with Ship of Fools, an album spotlighting the group's fast-tempo, riff-based songs, topped by the screaming vocals of guitarist Michael Thursby. The lyrics might have been hard to discern outside of the occasional shouted slogan, but the accompanying lyric sheet chronicled a devotion to, as one song title aptly put it, "Drinkin' and Drivin'." Each song seemed to be sung in the voice of a frustrated and inebriated truck driver barreling down the road, swilling a bottle, and expressing his anger and need for escape through stimulants and violence. The album was released only as a vinyl LP at first. With a running time of only 31 minutes, it had plenty of room to grow, which it did by two more furious tracks, "Pennsylvania" and "Watch Your Step," when it finally appeared on CD.
