I LOVE this product! I have never been able to do a French twist, and this hair pin makes it incredibly easy. I needed to practice a few times, but once you get the hang of it, it takes just a few seconds and you're ready to go. No more searching for dozens of bobby pins at the end of the day! I usually have to use a few bobby pins to catch my stray fly-aways because I have layers, but I would never be able to achieve such a stylish up-do on my own without this. I gave it four stars because it really only works for me just after I've washed and dried my hair... doesn't seem to "hold' after that. But that is most likely due to the length and cut of my hair. One other note: I always use it for several hours just after washing and drying because it leaves my hair with a very beautiful and natural-looking wave... no need for curlers!
I love the idea of a fast & easy style but I couldn't get this to hold my hair. My hair is med-thick and 3-4 inches below my shoulder. I've had long hair over 30 adult years and couldn't figure this out. I checked out the youtube video with the Goody rep demonstrated it but its hard to tell what she's doing. They say to put it in the bottom of your bun and flip up-well it feels like its tearing my hair out or ends up too loose.
I'm a tomboy, but I'm going into a profession for which I need to look elegant. The extent of my hair-dressing skills is a pony-tail. However, pony-tails loosen with time, and I wanted something I can just throw in and not worry about. This is the answer. Ok, so I was very confused the first time I tried to use this product, simply because the instructions were horribly written. What works for me is to twist my hair into a bun and then push the prongs through the bun (not through the base), so you will catch the twists in your hair. Then, when the prongs are just barely poking out the top of your bun, you flip up the base of the pin up while the prongs are being pushed against and then down the scalp (towards your neck). You end up with a very n ice updo that actually will hold very well! Since every twist I do is different, it may take a couple of tries to get just the right one, but it always looks so sleek and kinda like a french twist. Hope this helps others that were having issues with making it work! :)
I purchased this poduct because they didn't have spin pins at the store. I had lost my spin pins which I LOVE!!! I thought this would work well. My hair is fine and below my waist. Following the instructions, weaving the pin from the bottom of a bun then flipping it up and pushing in was impossible. As the previous person said, it felt like I was pulling my hair out, and I couldn't flip it high enough to push it back into the bun. I threw it in the drawer and went back to my stick to hold up my hair. Yesterday, I tried it again and found that I can get it to work if I start at the middle of my bun weaving it and then flipping the pin. The problem is that after the pin is set, it is not comfortable, the bun is not tight, and I have to fiddle with it the whole time I wear it. The Goody Spin Pins, on the other hand, are AWESOME! I can do jumping jacks with a bun pinned with that product.
I got these along with the spin pins.Love both, but the modern updo pin is wonderful for holding a lot of hair. I use it to hold my hair in a bun, or no hold a knot bun.

On the third try, I had this pin figured out. I have mid-back length, medium to thick hair, and my hair is really slick. I have a hard time getting bobby pins, barretts, ponytail bands, ect., to stay in my hair. But this Updo Tool is great! It holds a chignon tight all day or all night. I found twisting my hair tight and all the way to the ends helps. As I'm forming the bun, I make a figure 8 with my twist, which helps get all the ends tucked in, then as I'm driving the pin up thru the bottom, I go in, then back out, up and over the top loop of the circle 8, as I go back in at the top I start the lift, it picks up all the hair, and then I go back down thru bun. It should feel a bit tight as you're doing it if you want a tight chignon, but it doesn't pull out your hair. Its a great update on the old u-shaped open bobby pins my granny used in her long hair. I got it in a kit that had the updo tool, the spin pins, and two combs. If you can find that kit, it's the best value. Great for anyone that needs a classy bun or if you just have a lot of hair and are on the go all the time like me. I use it to keep my hair up all day while backwoods trout fishing. If you figure this tool out, I'm sure you'll love it!!! Also great for holding your hair when you're using masks and treatments. Its cheap enough, just give it a try and play around with it!
