The magnificent second novel from the legendary author of One Flew Over the Cuckooâ's Nest
Following the astonishing success of his first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckooâ's Nest, Ken Kesey wrote what Charles Bowden calls â?one of the few essential books written by an American in the last half century.â? This wild-spirited tale tells of a bitter strike that rages through a small lumber town along the Oregon coast. Bucking that strike out of sheer cussedness are the Stampers. Out of the Stamper familyâ's rivalries and betrayals Ken Kesey has crafted a novel with the mythic impact of Greek tragedy.
Hank and Leland Stamper are half-brothers in a family of loggers. When the loggers' union goes on strike, the Stampers refuse to go with them. In addition to their conflict with the community, Hank and Leland are in conflict with each other: Hank is head of the family business; Leland is an Ivy League graduate. Hank has had an affair with Leland's mother; Leland seduces Hank's wife in revenge. These complexities are illustrated using multiple points of view, film techniques, and other narrative innovations.
