Son is the long-awaited and compelling conclusion to The Giver Quartet, a true sequel to Lowry's Caldecott Medal?winning The Giver. Told in three separate storylines, Son ties the first three books of The Giver Quartet together ? The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Messenger ? into one breath-taking and thought-provoking story. Thrust back into the dark, claustrophobic world of The Giver, we meet a compelling new heroine, fourteen year old Claire, and see another view of this dystopian community. We also meet Jonas from The Giver once again, and Kira, the heroine of Gathering Blue. In a final clash between good and evil, a new hero emerges.
The final book in Lois Lowry's critically acclaimed Giver Quartet pulls different stories and people together from each of the books through the troubling experiences of a young woman named Claire. Culture, conformity, dystopia, and freedom are just a few of themes here. Told in three novella-like sections, the story follows Claire through her life. She became a Birthmother at the age of 13, only to be cruelly decertified after the difficult birth of her first "Product" when she was 14. Eventually escaping, Claire comes to on the shores of an unfamiliar village, where she struggles to remember her past and the locals can't understand the terribly restrictive place that she came from. The truth soon comes out, and key characters from the past come together to face the impossible. Set in different times that reference other three books in the series, including THE GIVER, THE MESSENGER, and GATHERING BLUE, this is a stirring conclusion.
