In this superb work of fiction, Nobel Laureate Saul Bellow writes comically and wisely about the tenacious claims of first love. Harry Trellman, an aging, astute businessman, has never belonged anywhere and is as awkward in his human attachments as he is gifted in observing the people around him. But Harryâ's observational talents have not gone unnoticed by â?trillionaireâ? Sigmund Adletsky, who retains Harry as his advisor. Soon the old man discovers Harryâ's intense forty-year passion for a twice-divorced interior designer, Amy Wustrin. At the exhumation and reburial of her husband, Harry is provided, thanks to Sigmund, perhaps the final means for disclosing feelings amassed over a lifetime. Written late in Bellowâ's career, The Actual is a maestroâ's dissection of the affairs of the heart.
In this first major work in 10 years from Nobel Prize-winning novelist Saul Bellow, Harry Trellman, the narrator, is an elderly Chicagoan who becomes the uneasy friend of Sigmund Adletsky, an even older millionaire. Adletsky shows Trellman how he must pick up his life with Amy Wustrin, a high school sweetheart he has never forgotten. As the story reaches its intensely poignant climax, we find Trellman in a cemetery in the middle of a Chicago snowstorm, helping Amy to re-bury her ex-husband, and finding a little self-redemption in the bargain. THE ACTUAL (1997), at 112 pages, is actually a novella. And, as in so many of Bellow's later novels, it includes an intense awareness of the approach of death.
