Rennie Airth's third John Madden novel finds the former Scotland Yard detective investigating the death of a Polish girl in London near the end of the second World War. Madden has been retired for more than a decade, but he agrees to take the case because the girl had worked on his farm. Every time he seems to find a useful link to the killer, another body turns up, until eventually he must travel to continental Europe and try to track the assassin through the rubble of the war. Rennie Airth has joined C.J. Sansom and Charles Todd atop the list of historical mystery writers, and this outing is every bit as satisfying as the previous two entries in the Madden series.
