A group of children, entranced with the study of Egypt, play their own Egypt game, are visited by a secret oracle, become involved in a murder, and befriend the Professor of the local junk shop.
The A-Z Antique Shop is a shabby store run by a taciturn older man known as the Professor. The shop's abandoned storage yard features a few curios and soon draws the attention of 11-year-old April Hall, her friend Melanie Ross, and Melanie's younger brother, Marshall. Inspired by their mutual love of Egypt, April and Melanie turn the storage yard into the land of Egypt--a land filled with altars, oracles, and sacred rituals created by the girls. Joined by a few other neighborhood kids, play in the land of Egypt turns serious when it seems that the oracle they have created actually has the ability to answer questions. Further complicating the situation is the murder of a local girl--and the fact that her killer is still roaming the neighborhood. A celebration of creativity, imagination, individuality, and friendship, THE EGYPT GAME is a 1968 Newbery Honor Book and is illustrated with occasional B&W paintings. A sequel, THE GYPSY GAME, continues the adventures of April and her friends.
