A first installment in a new trilogy co-written by an acclaimed screenwriter and an award-winning author follows an epic struggle for survival between humans and vampires, a tale that is set against a backdrop of the post-World War II era in eastern Europe and America. 250,000 first printing.
Acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro (PAN'S LABYRINTH) took a break from filmmaking to co-author this novel with mystery writer Chuck Hogan. The first in a planned trilogy, THE STRAIN takes del Toro's normal milieu of horror and adds a procedural, almost clinical twist. A jet has landed at JFK, with most of its passengers dead from a mysterious cause, and CDC star Dr. Ephraim Goodweather is called to the scene to investigate. His findings reveal that it's not an airborne disease or biological weapon at fault; instead vampires have brought their ancient thirst to America's most populous city, where there are buckets of blood and numerous souls to turn. THE STRAIN's breed of vampires isn't the typical Bram Stoker brand, and the legends and folklore have been supplanted by epidemiology and biology to chilling effect.
