One of the fascinating stories out of World War II is that of a failed attempt to assassinate Adolph ****** in 1944. The story is especially intriguing because it involved soldiers who had joined up out of intense loyalty to their country, but who had become disenchanted (and disgusted) by the methods of the Third Reich. Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager was part of the plot, which was code-named Valkyrie, and here he reveals its genesis, scope, and intricacies, as he tells what went wrong at the last minute and what happened when the plot was discovered. Von Boeselager was one of the few who escaped the brutal retribution, and he died in 2008 shortly before this narrative was published.
