Tells the stories of a frontier woman, a disillusioned professor, New Mexico's first bishop, early life in Quebec, an ambitious artist, and a Southern slaveowner
A LOST LADY, which tells the story of Marian Forrester, a wife and then a widow in a small Nebraska town, and Niel Herbert, the narrator, who has been devoted to her since he was a child, is one of Cather's lesser-known novels, but considered by many to be one of her best. THE PROFESSOR'S HOUSE is about an aging, idealistic professor who struggles to hang on to his old values in a changing world. DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP, set in the American Southwest and based on a true story, is about the literal and spiritual journey of two French missionaries in the American Southwest in the mid-1800s. SHADOWS ON THE ROCK depicts life in 17th-century Quebec in telling the story of a displaced French philosopher and his young daughter, who falls in love with a fur trader. In LUCY GAYHEART a young woman leaves her small-town lover to go to Chicago to study music and has a tempestuous love affair with an aging charmer--a singer for whom she abandons her career, a decision that leads eventually to her destruction.
