[...] This is a terrific product however, parental supervision should be there until your child is well and truly stable on their feet. It is wood, it is a cube, it does have corners and things that stick out. You don't want your child to fall on or against it.
As my daughter got older (she was 17 months at the time of this review), she started to use more features of the product. At 10/11 months, she would hit the wooden discs so they come wobbling down. She lacked the coordination to work them back to the top in their tracks. At 17 months, she can do that now.
Next was winding the beads along the metal rails. I also used to flick the beads to make them spin. She found this very entertaining. At 17 months, she can make them spin herself. Opening and closing the 4 doors on the side came next. She paid very little attention to the alphabet pieces. At 17 months, she knows the animals behind each of the 4 doors and can also identify half of the animals used for the letters of the alphabet. I am particularly thrilled about that! We play together and I ask her to show me the animals that start with various letters and she points them out. She has only just started playing with the last side of the cube - the rollers that show the 3 different animals you can mix and match. I highly recommend this product for its durability and longevity. Best price is definitely at Target and for what you get for that price, its worth every penny! Bravo to B Toys for such a fun product.
We actually have an older version of this toy that we have had for 5 years (since my older son was a baby) and we recently got this one as a gift for my younger son. And let me tell you, during all the playgroups I've had here and all the babies and kids that have been through this house, this toy is ALWAYS a favorite. Even after they figure it out, the babies just love it (and so do the toddlers!) I'm actually buying it for my 1-year old niece, too, b/c even with the hundreds of other toys in our house, it really is still such a favorite with everybody.
My daughter got this for her first birthday over two months ago, and it's quickly become her favorite toy! She had a little trouble putting the balls in at first, but it didn't take long for her to figure out how to push them through the holes on the top. Now she thinks it's really fun. She hasn't gotten the concept of the hammer yet, but she'll entertain herself with that in her own way. Another positive: there are screws so you can take it apart should your little one put things other than balls down the holes. :-) A great birthday gift!
