I first saw this in a Lego catalogue and didn't see any interest in this set and ignored it, I am only 17 at the time of reviewing this and had no interest in Volkswagen in any way, after 2 years since its release it really grabbed my attention after seeing reviews and the LEGO designer video. I purchased it ahead of the other 2013 exclusive sets.
This is a must have set for every Volkswagen fan and for people who grew up in the 60's. This is an impressive recreation of the iconic Volkswagen Camper Van from the 1960's, this is an iconic and popular LEGO set as its one of LEGO's best seller.
This set contains four unique pieces: Tr. Yellow Plate 1X1 W/Tooth, Pc used as interior lights in the Camper Van. Curtain Vw "No. 1" is a brand new element used as 6 curtains in the Camper Van. Bright Orange Pop Up Roof is another brand new element used for the Pop-Top. Brick Yellow Frame F. Train Window 1X2X3 only appears in this set in this colour.
This set does not include any minifigures. This set is not intended for play and is only a display set with features like the actual Camper Van.
This set is not really made to play, it does have features like: opening doors (4), Opening engine door which reveals the realistic engine design, opening rear window, opening safari windows, the iconic "V" front with the Volkswagen logo, front and rear licence plates, Gas tank, front and rear lights, Pop-Top, luggage rack, fold down table, seats can be changed into a bed, sink, lava lamp, plant, photo, "Make LEGO Models Not War" t-shirt, drivers area details.
This set contains fifteen unnumbered bags. The two instruction booklets are thick which come in a cardboard sleeve to keep them straight with the stickers.
The build is very enjoyable and not too repetitive starting at the bottom and working your way up, the stickers where the only down side to the build which stressed me out. The build is very study when complete.
Value for Money:
This retails for £79.99 in the UK and contains 1334 pieces. Volkswagen fans will really appreciate this model, however people who are not familiar may not be drawn to this set other than it is a bright vehicle which stands out from other Lego models on my shelve. It delivers a different build experience, compared to your average set as its aimed towards adults.
Volkswagen is iconic and can be recognised all over the world as this will be a fine addition to your collection and will make a great collector’s item.
This set is available at Lego Stores and http://shop.lego.com/ and other selected retailers.
The box is very classic and 60's style, with snapshots of features on the Camper Van.
This will do very well as a long term potential as for adults who are from the Volkswagen Community.
Yes, this It is a great collector’s item and display piece with minor flaws like:
Pop-Top is uneven, gaps in some areas, the stickers were a real pain and could have been printed, grill lines are suppose to be inside the van, engine door sticks out, small kitchen needs to be bigger, no turning axle (Even the wheel doesn't move) It could of have brick built luggage.
Final Analysis/ Conclusion:
Overall this set it is a must have set for every Volkswagen fan. If you’re a Lego collector of cars this will also be a unique and it will stand out from other Lego cars of this scale. This set has four unique pieces. Is it worth the money: for “Volkswagen” fans is a must buy. This set is a best seller so get you hands on it when you can.
I have built many of times large lego models and by far this has been the best model I have built. The detail in making the Volkswagen was outstanding the detail designer but lots of hard work and hours to get this looking exactly the same as a real camper van. The curtains had to be my favourite idea surprised to see that they aren't stickers! For £80 I must say that this is well worth the money and they building is ever so fun! Does take a few hours but it keeps your mind on the roll of what your building and where it's going next! I loved this and wish lego did a few more of these type builds maybe a caravan or a trailer for this camper van model!!
The minifigures in this set are all awesome and well detailed. Luke's new hair piece is the best on any Luke Skywalker minifigure, in the past and Leia's new hair is also very cool. Han, Obi-Wan/Ben Kenobi and Chewbacca are all quite basic and have no new pieces, but are still great minifigures. Also you get Darth Vader with this set, which is strange, but it’s still nice to get him included in the set. Maybe I'd have rather of had R2-D2 or C3PO, than Darth Vader, but it's still a nice touch though.
This set is fantastic- the attention to detail is great. I love how they even included the weird hologram game that Chewbacca and C3PO play in episode 4. The interior has lots of good accessories without overcrowding it. For example it includes 2 beds and Lukes training area. One problem, however, is that it is quite difficult to fit 2 minifigures in the cockpit but luckily, its not impossible.
This set was quite a challenging build; even my dad had trouble building it. It took my dad and me around 4-5 hours to build, but I like a long challenging build.
Overall… I love this set. I would recommend it to any star wars fan as this set is very iconic and, once again, the attention to detail is simply stunning.
From the outset you can tell that this is going to be a high-value set. Same price as the Fire Brigade or Grand Emporium, yet you get 2 separate structures. Each has it's own awesome "wow" factor. The detail level continues to impress with such considerations as the lofted bedroom w/ skylight, fireplace and kitchen area. The pet shop is so much fun. Dog pen under the stairs? I may use that at home. A wonderful addition to any collector's landscape. My streets will continue to grow for years to come.
I am a parent of two Lego fans. Recently, I bought them the Lego Pet Shop. My children were really happy when we brought this home . My oldest son said that it was hard to build the trap door on the brown apartment. My youngest son said the blue pet shop was a bit confusing at first, but later it became easy. So I would highly recommend the Lego Pet Shop because of its features. Also, I recommend this set to those who like challenges in building lego sets. If you enjoyed building the Green Grocer, the Cafe Corner, and the Fire Brigade, etc ., this set would be perfect for you!
This set really approaches perfection. Had so much fun building, love the look, and the many micro builds are very satisfying. The colours are great and the detail keeps bringing me back to look. Would love to see the next modular build off of the two building concept, maybe with a bank or something.
I have been into Legos for years, and this set by far is the best, with the exception of the Republic Star Destroyer and the Death Star. Definitely worth the money. The set is really big for the price, and the ion cannons on the side have the best flick-missile system ever. I also love that it comes with Count Dooku and Padme, finally!! Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
This set blew my mind when i saw it came out! It's even more amazing once you get it, so bbuy it now or put it on your wishlist...
-trapdoor works well when combined with Rancr Pit
-entrance door is cool
-could be a little bigger; i have trouble fitting extra minifigs without getting in the way of Jabba's Dias
Quick Tip: I recommend adding a protocol droid Jabba's Dias as a Translator Droid like in the movies
This is a brilliant set. The minaret watchtower is really good and I personally love the opening door. My favourite feature is the trapdoor to the rancor pit and the movable dais. My favourite figure is the new Jabba and I think that lego did a really great job on him. I also like Jabba's pipe, food bowl and secret stash under his dais.
Here are my minifigure ratings:
Bib Fortuna: 10/10
Gamorrean Guard: 10/10
Han Solo in Carbonite: 10/10
B'ommar Monk: 10/10
Salacious B. Crumb: 10/10
I personally think that Chewie should be redesigned.
The only con was that there should have been more of Jabba's entourage e.g. Tessek, J'quille, Rappertunie, Vizam and Rystall Sant.
