Pros- Excellent pictures, excellent resolution, turns on quickly. Cons- Need to learn Coolpix/ Nikon interface well to take excellent pictures, clumsy touchscreen, takes long time to shut off. Video record button is in clumsy place. I bought this camera out of haste in a surprise trip abroad. This is my second Coolpix, but I found they changed some items on the "Scene" menu and added a few new items. The auto-brightness and auto-focus works well once you learn how to interact with the camera and the touchscreen interface. The camera is not intuitive to random people that you hand the camera to take your picture. Thus you may have pictures in which the foreground is not as bright as the background. As this is a 16MP camera, you should have an appropriate SD card. I found a 4GB too small as the average picture size is 6.5MB. The minimum SD card is 8GB or better. see less

My boyfriend bought me a Nikon Coolpix S4200 for Christmas and I've used it 2 times since Christmas of 2012 and I am very disappointed in the camera. The pictures turn out either very bright or very dark and adjusting the flash doesn't make a difference. The camera is also very slow, after taking a picture you need to wait about 15 to 20 seconds before you can take another one. If you try to look at the picture or take another one it says, "please wait for camera to finish recording." The thing is I wasn't even on recording mode. I have tried changing the settings and that has not made a difference. We are going to return this camera and buy a Canon Powershot and hopefully that camera will be better. I would not recommend buying this camera. see less

I had originally wanted the D90 for what seemed like ages, but while researching to finally buy, I came across this camera. It had everything I loved about the D90, plus some more capability like higher resolution, option for wifi transfer, etc and the price is a lot less! I actually purchased elsewhere, seeing now Target has a lower price and an available warranty ... I would highly recommend this camera. I went into my local Target yesterday to buy the D5100 instead of this model, but they were out. I was a bit disappointed at first, but that ended when I took my first picture. Wow! With my first go, I decided to see what the automatic functions could do. Not bad, honestly, but not great, either. Definitely good enough to put in a photo album. Being my first DSLR, I wanted more from it, so went full manual. Stunning! My shots look professional. Sure, this is a learning curve, so for every thirty shots or so, I get one good one. It's not a camera problem, but a "me" problem. Once I get used to the functions of this camera, I KNOW that these shots will be perfect 100 percent of the time. If you decide to go for this model, you will not have any regrets. Get used to the manual functions because it is worth it, ten fold. Excellent buy. So happy! see less

I bought this camera a week ago with my 20percent off code for target screwing up my baby registry. I've been hesitant on spending this much money on a camera for several years now but with a baby girl on the way, i wanted an awesome camera i could take a million pictures with. This camera is worth every penny. although you need to practice and read the manual to take amazing pictures, so far I've been taking pictures of anything and everything and I have been impressed. This is my 3rd DSLR camera, Proud to be a Nikonian. Menus are easy to understand and functions as compared to Canons. Price is better than its competition. feature and functions are out of this world. It's roughly $ dollars more compared to the 60D. Having a dynamic range 13.9EV vs 11.5, It's water sealed and has a continuous focus in movie mode, Larger view finder and coverage, 2 SD card slots can be configures RAW & Jpeg or Jpeg and Backup Mirror mode, Or Overflow. 6fps vs 5.3fps, Has a larger sensor and overall weight it's lighter. I wished they would had bundled the 18-135mm kit lens from the D80 instead of the 18-105mm, Did I say it has 39 focus points vs 9...I suggest get the body then invest on a good glass. see less

I bought this camera last week on my way to the Coast for vacation. I'd had another camera in mind but for the price and camera capabilities, this one ended up being the better deal. First off, the flash on my camera works perfectly. Whatever problems the other customer had, she either didn't know how to work it properly or the camera had a factory flaw. There are a TON of options for such a simple little point and shoot camera. There's 3D picture mode, a beach scene mode, panoramic shots and all the other standards from night shots to portraits and even a smart shot mode which takes AMAZING pictures. Beats auto mode hands down. The pictures it takes are solid once you figure out what mode works best for each scene. The only issue I have so far is I can't find the speed shutter mode, to take multiple pictures at once, course that might just be the sports mode and I haven't caught on yet ha-ha. Overall, for the price and quality, this camera is well worth what you pay for it. see less

I bought this camera a week ago thinking it was going to be a great camera for the price. Was I ever wrong! I've tried rechargeable and lithium batteries JUST tested the camera around the house, and both types are at half life in no time at all. I'm thinking this has GOT to be a defect, because NO camera should burn through batteries THAT fast! Also, any sort of movement in the photo, and there's a huge blur. I found the design to be putsy and not user friendly. I'm planning to return this today for a different model. If I'm denied the exchange for any reason I will be HIGHLY disappointed in Target, as I do not see myself being happy with this model or even using it. see less

I bought a camera that was on sale for [$] my husband siad he wanted to buy me a nicer one so he bought me this one because the Target employee in the electronics section recommended it. This camera is HORRIBLE. The only pictures that come out decent are the ones that are in daylight. low light pictures all come out blurry. super slow shutter speed so you lose the shot you're trying to take. We took it to Disneyland. big mistake! see less

I've always loved nikon cameras and needed an upgrade. My only complaint is having to switch to "live mode" for certain shots, which slows the shutter speed down considerably, making timing on certain shots harder to perfect. Lots of options and takes great photos and HD video see less

I own 5 Nikon DSLR bodies, along with a big pile of Nikon glass. My DSLR bodies range from a D4 and D3, through a D7000, and down to a couple of D3100s. I went to the Target store yesterday to purchase another deeply discounted/discontinued D3100. My store did not have one, and I was a bit disappointed until I noticed the superior D5100 discounted to only [$] more than the D3100. The images are indistinguishable from the images made by my D4 or D3. The camera is light and very intuitive. Pull this thing out of the box, charge the battery, slap in an SD card, select Auto mode, squeeze the trigger and be ready to be amazed. It has enough bells and whistles to satisfy my need to tweak things, and enough for you to learn to tweak things if you want to. Buy the thing! Buy a Class 10 SD card, and a couple of 52mm UV filters and screw your cap on backwards and go shoot! Get the excellent 55-200mm VR lens bundled with it. see less

After much research -and a fair amount of worry-, I took the plunge in April '12, and purchased this camera as a birthday gift to myself. I have been VERY pleased with the ease of use, photo quality, and overall performance of this camera. The kit lens is adequate for everyday use, and the controls -at first look a little overwhelming- are easily tamed with perseverence and regular use. I would recommend this item to a friend -- and DID -- she purchased her D5100 just last month! see less

This is a HUGE step up from my everyday use Fuiji Film camera that I have had for five years. My husband surprised me with this for an Early Christmas gift. I am floored by how amazing this is. I want to take a picture of EVERYTHING! It is easy to use and follow, I read the manual but there's a quick use paper. It comes with a lens, the one I got which was on sale for early black Friday. An extended warranty for the lens and the buttons are simple and easy to understand. I just got it so I haven't used the movie part yet but the clarity in the pictures are professional quality. For taking still life or portraits this camera works well. But when your trying to capture anything moving, it won't. The video quality is terrible and when taking any kind of a motion photo its blurry. This camera is NOT worth the money. I wish I would have just saved my money on this. see less

Quality is alright. Pictures do sometimes come out blury so the object has to be very still. Picture quality only looks good in bright lightings. One thing I like about this camera is that it can capture a clear detail of small object where as most cameras that I have used couldn't. For example, a diamond ring. Video quality is nice too. It doesn't lag. I actually like the camera a lot despite the quality being blury sometimes but not all cameras are perfect. Although I am satisfied with it, this is a camera that I don't think should be worth more than [$]. see less

Purchased this camera w/ the extra 110 lens. Opened box to see a pretty and shiny new toy. Started taking pics and they are completely awful. I have taken over 600 pics and maybe 50 of them are usable. Everyone is blurry. I have played with all the setting and still get the same outcome. It is not good with action at all. My dog looks like a ghost in all pics and he's just walking across the room. The slightest movement, even just pushing the capture button, blurs all the images. I have returned this camera and do not suggest it for anyone! Nikon should be ashamed of themselves for putting out such a poor product at such a high price. see less

I have 3 small children, and planned to use this camera for pictures of them and all of their activities. I have had it for a few days now, and have read through the entire manual and changed settings, etc. All of the pictures I have taken of my kids are blurry! Even the ones where they are holding fairly still. That being said, this takes gorgeous pictures if your subject is stationary. The macro mode is really cool, and the settings are cool too. Not what I was looking for though. This will be going back tomorrow. see less

This camera's internal workings are creating dust and oil on the sensor. Look for D600 dust problems online. Nikon has yet to admit and resolve this problem. Sent mine back to Nikon. Otherwise an amazing camera if you don't mind spots on pics above F8 ! see less

Great entry to mid-level DSLR. Features rival professional cameras for half the cost! The kit lens is so so but for around [$] you can get a 35mm 1.8f lens. With this camera you don't have to be an expert to take professional quality photographs. see less
