I have both the diaper genie original and the new elite one with the hands free. I like the ease of the hands free but there is less odors from the original with the lid you have to open. This item has been a lifesaver. I don't know how people just throw diapers in the trash can. I have also been using the arm and hammer deodorizer docs and that has freshened the diaper genie as well.
We received this item as a gift 5 years ago when my daughter was born. I now have a 1 year old and prematurely gave away this item to a friend having triplets. I realized I still needed something for my son's diapers, so I bought another device that uses regular trash bags. Boy, did we make a mistake! My son's room always smells like a dirty diaper and after resisting for 4 mos. to buy yet another diaper pail, I'm giving in! I'm purchasing this item again. We never had a problem with the Diaper Genie and even though the money for refills can add up, it's worth it. I'm just kicking myself for giving the other product a chance and wasting more money!
I've had people visit and comment on how my room DOESN'T smell like baby.
The Elite has a foot pedal, which this one doesn't, that also happens to be what makes it less odor-proof than the Esentials. The swinging door fans the smell back into the room. I was planning on using baking soda to help it smell even less, but I ended up not needing it, its that good.
Unfortunately, I didn't have enough space in my room for a changing table so I have to change my baby's diapers on my bed or his crib. It takes takes more cleaning on my part, but I don't have to worry about him rolling off a table. If I did have a table, I can see how the Essentials would be difficult to use use with one hand.
It's also short and bulky. I'm only five feet tall and I hate stooping over to use it.
And in case you're wondering, this thing is super easy to change, clean, and refill.
Never had a problem. Been using the diaper geenie2 for years first with my son and now with my little girl. The bags have NEVER torn. And one of these refill rings last for quite while depending on how many diapers u use of course. My newborn is 5 weeks old now and we r still on the 2nd refill ring.
