I purchased the 5 shelf and 3 shelf bookcases over a year ago. I found them easy to assemble but found it a little easier to have an extra set of hands. I have had other ready to assemble furniture but these are sturdier that those other pieces. I also find the details on them make them appear as a more expensive piece of furniture. I have moved them a couple of times and they have stayed together without needing any repair. They are sturdy and found them steady on carpet of tile floor. I purchased this desk over a year ago on sale at my local Target. I wanted to leave my thoughts after seeing a few negative reviews. I have been extremely happy with the desk. The surface is smooth but not overly painted or varnished. The keyboard tray slides smoothly and hinges shut well. The quality is sturdy, much better than I expected. I put this together by myself the other morning.The bookcase is sturdy and well made, labeled very clearly, and the hardware was arranged in small packets according to direction's steps. Take your time. The only beef I had was with the locking pin and lock devices. You drop a circular lock into a hole and its corresponding bolt is tapped into its hole. HOwever, sometimes they dont jibe, because the lock's holes are drilled too deeply. I would highly recommend after step three to tap in the bolt, put the pieces in contact, and THEN insert the locking hoobyjiggy thingamabob. This way, you can turn it and make it surround the bolt instead of blindly trying to put the bolt into the lock. Other than that, it's great. Enjoy see less

I bought 2 of these and the TV stand with glass doors. I put a bookcase on each side of the TV stand and it makes my family room look so good. I bought the black my husband put all 3 pieces together in a couple hours. and he love it all. Great prices. I understand when people say so many screws but if you want it to stay together thats what you need. Also an electric screw gun doesnt hurt see less

The directions were clear and it took about a half an hour for me to put it together. It was packed well, so no damage. It was a cheap piece of furniture, so I think it is about worth what was paid. I wasn't looking for a shelf to last through time, just through childhood. I didn't expect hardwood. It is sturdy enough to hold books. Its biggest fault? On the carpet, it doesn't stand flat once books are loaded. It kinda sways forward so there is a bigger gap on the top then the bottom near the wall. I put a wall anchor in. Comes with one. and I feel better about it, but it still leans forward. I think my next step would be to put a little wedge of wood under the front of it. I dunno. I think if given the chance to repurchase, I would spend a little more to get a more stable one. see less

I am not mechanically inclined at all and I put this together in about an hour as my husband and kids slept. You do not need any outside tools and the parts are grouped together and labeled according to each step. Grips for the ends are highly recommended....surprised that they are not included. The package arrived two days earlier than the expected delivery date in my order confirmation. No missing pieces at all, but one did have some white missing on the edge and the inside particleboard was showing--about a 1-inch square section--but that portion wouldn't be visible unless you lie on the floor and look at the underside of the desk, so I didn't take issue with that. The desk was very simple to assemble by myself and probably took less than an hour to do so. I do wish I had reinforced the wooden dowels with wood glue as some parts were wobbly during assembly, but after the whole piece was put together it felt a lot more solid. Would I sit on it? No. But it does a great job as a desk--which is exactly what I wanted. After building was complete, I did notice a few gray marks on some corners but I'm not sure if they were already there or happened during the build. I recommend assembling the piece on a rug or carpet and move it later. Overall it's a great value! see less

I ordered 2 of these Avington cabinets. They are solid and beautiful. They look more expensive then they are, yet because they are reasonably priced, I was able to afford them. I love the rich dark wood color. Assembly took a while, but I figured it out. Only problem was that initially the smell of the product, i'm guessing the finish was so strong that I had to put it out my patio for a couple of days to air out. Absolutely love this desk! I was hesitant to buy it because so many complained of having the desk arrive damaged but I pushed my luck. Came in perfect condition. The box wasn't even damaged surprisingly. You have to walk up at least 50 concrete steps before you even get to the front door. Good Job UPS! Other than that, the desk is beautiful. I ordered this desk hoping it would not look too cheap. It is one of the lower priced desks out there that uses a drawer to hold the keyboard. When closed up it looks like a very clean, sleek piece of furniture, costing far more than what I actually paid. Simply attach four legs and a drawer knob and it is done! We needed something to bring our TV up a few more inches. At first we considered building a box to set the TV on, but it wasn't going to match our Avington furniture. While browsing the other Avington pieces online, I came across this hutch. We took measurements and headed to Target to buy this piece. It was easy to assemble, and took us about 20 minutes. Thanks to another reviewer we knew to be extra careful to make sure that the finished edges were facing outwards before tightening the cam locks. We are using this piece on top of our Avington media stand, even though it was made for the Avington desk. I didn't like the look of the small adjustable shelves, so we left them out and put small baskets in the cubbyholes instead. All together with an Avington bookshelf on each side it almost looks like one wall unit. We are so pleased with our purchase, and can now see the TV from any seat in the room. see less

For a DYI project I say its fairly easy for 1 person to accomplish. The instructions...HA! You have to follow the rudimentary line drawings. Just make sure you set the proper length of wooden dpwls in the proper holes which was the biggest pain. It was not very descriptive regarding this step and could leave you taking it apart to remedy this. One assembled, it looks very nice and sturdy. It would be a tremendous relief of concern if you do anchor it to the wall with the hardware I did find included - Even if you do not have off-spring running around. see less

This is exactly as pictured! It is the perfect piece of furniture for m daughter's room, for her books and knick knacks. I bought many of the Avington pieces and they all match perfectly! My delivery came in the rain and had been sitting for hours in the rain, but everything was packed really nicely and with all the styrofoam, everything inside was dry! I've had experience assembling furniture like this, so I did not need the instructions, but overall, you don't need anything more than a Phillips head screwdriver...everything else came in the box. The pieces are real wood, except if a piece has a back piece, which is that MDF, but it is not too flimsy...as a matter of fact, once it's screwed on, it is very durable and really helps to hold everything together. Putting the desk together was a breeze since most of the components are already assembled. The wood feels solid and the desk is very sturdy. The stain is a deep, brown reddish color. Its design more appealing than on the pictures on Target.com. It looks and feels more than the advertised price, and this is a great furniture to add to your living space, or small home office, on which you can put a desktop or laptop computer. I have a 27 inches MAC display on it and it fits perfectly. As other have said in the review section, if you are hesitating about this purchase, don't. I only had a small problem with the shelf wobbling- one leg was a tad short- but I stuck a felt piece to the bottom of the leg and it's perfect now. When we received the first box, we were not sure what to think. A day or two later the second box arrived. Everything was intact. The pieces were clearly marked, and the directions were complete. We took another reviewer's idea and switched the two sides. Even then, it went together quickly. I really like the elevated corner shelf for the monitor and the separate cart for the PC tower. I luv it so much that I now have 2. I bought the first one about 1-1/2 years ago to work from home. And because it works so well for what I need it for, I bought another one for my personal computer. I have my small TV on the little corner shelf and the VCR underneath. It probably took my husband and I a few hours to put it together but we went slow and were deliberate with the directions. And we set it up opposite from what the photos shows -- it is possible! I like a lot of horizontal space to spread out my work, craft supplies, etc. and don't need a hutch with little cubbyholes which can be useless for me. Received this bookcase today and on the day they said it would be delivered. When I opened it everything was tightly packed but the instructions were missing. Target was able to give me the manufactures info and the manufacture e-mailed me the directions right away. Took me 10 minutes tops to put this together. I already wrote a review on this but somehow it doesn't show to me. I love this shelf. It's heavy and durable. I actually enjoyed assembling it, too, with the way all the hardware was organized in little sections by steps. It's a great book shelf but I use it mostly for decor - in the living room it just filled up a stupid empty corner where nothing else would go. Highly recommend. I was a bit hesitant once I saw one star of a previous review but after I read it I realized I need to still buy one and rehabilitate its reputation. My package wasn't damaged and it was really heavy, which is good, because a piece of furniture like that, you want it stable and reliable. I enjoyed assembling it, too, because everything was such a good quality and all the hardware was packed in sections for part 1, 2 and so on of assembly. We had a corner in our living room that asked for something and this shelf just clicked in there. So ready to put some decor and books in it and it's ready to roll. I also appreciate that it has legs, because it's easier to run the wires behind it. It had a little scratch - paint off - on the top trim, but I decided it's not worth the hassle of return, nothing a little black sharpie couldn't fix. see less

[...] I only bought this shelf (with the rattan baskets) versus the cheaper identical yet non-basketed shelf [...]The shelf came with all parts required to assemble it - including a hex wrench; no screwdriver or hammer was required, though I did use my hammer to tap in the wood plugs at the end. No parts of the shelf assembly were damaged, and the wood is deeply and well-stained, if a little grainy in parts. It looks much more expensive than it was, and fits in well with my modern/mission decor. The colors are true to the picture shown online. Assembly took me approximately 15-20 minutes on my own, free of frustration, and resulted in a very pretty, very sturdy shelf perfect for my needs - a book shelf next to a desk that will have things sitting on top of and within it. The rattan baskets are nice plus, though I'm not sure I'll use them every day - they also seem well-made. I didnt know what to expect reading the reviews but after getting it put together I have this to say... It was one of the easiest pieces of furniture that I have ever put together. If you complained about it being difficult then I would guess you would have trouble putting together a childrens puzzle. If you can put in about a dozen screws and look at an instruction booklet, with pictures, then I think you will be able to get it done in the twenty minutes it took me. I think it took longer to clean up the styrofoam pieces than put the chair together. As for the chair itself... looks great, is comfortable, and is exactly what I expected it to be. Maybe a bit over priced but the overall quality looks like it may be worth it. see less

I bought this bookcase to fill an empty corner in my bedroom that needed some nicer organization. I assembled it in about a half hour and I am very impressed with the overall look... appears much more expensive than it actually is. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars on quality was there were a few scuffs on two of the shelves, but a little furniture polish helped to diminish them a bit, and the pegs that connect the upper and lower pieces did not want to go in as easily as they probably should have. Also, heads up on the 3 wood screws required to secure the two pieces... one screw goes on the back two pieces and attaches fine, however the screws that go into the side pieces were at a very awkward angle and difficult to screw in - you need a short phillips head or it won't go in... I ended up using a swiss army knife. All in all I'm very happy with the shelf and you can't beat the price. Oh, and shipping was super fast, got here a week earlier than Target quoted!! see less

I am really happy with this purchase! I confess I did not put it together - my bf did, however he did not seem to run into any trouble with it. It is not super sturdy or very high quality, but I don't plan to use it for filing every single day. I am so glad I finally bought this desk. I have been eyeing it for months and when it went on sale, I pulled the trigger. It is absolutely beautiful, and so functional with the built-in shelving underneath. I bought the black Avington banker's chair to go with it and it is just beautiful. Another feature that I LOVE about this desk is how large it is. I bought it because I will begin working on a dissertation soon and wanted a desk with lots of space for papers, books, laptop, etc. This will definitely do the trick. When I'm done with school this desk will be an excellent workbench for arts and crafts. Only a couple of cons, like other reviewers mine arrived with a few nicks and scratches on the edges, but it was nothing a Sharpie couldn't fix! Found the style of this desk to be a exactly what I was looking for... wanted something simple that would go with anything. My plan was to convert my daughter's old bedroom into a computer/guest room and when I ordered it I had barely begun. It sat in the box for 3 months until I could get everything vacated. I couldn't get my new room painted fast enough! The only downfall was when the time came to actually assemble it, I discovered that the center "bar" underneath the tabletop was broken. I figured it was a quick fix and my father-in-law took care of it with no problem. The assembly was quite easy and after we flipped it right side up, discovered a small blemish in the finish. Fortunately, that was towards a corner so I figure I will be able to cover it up with a lamp or something. Neither of the 2 issues would have been worth repacking for return. All in all a very good looking piece of furniture for the price, especially if you watch for it to go on sale! see less

I love these shelves!! i bought three of them for mu living room. I had a hard time finding something that had an adjustable shelf to accommodate my 12 x12 scrapbooks and these do a beautiful job.
