We had the same pepper grinder for almost 20 years...one of the Lucite types with the silver adjustment ball on the top. It was really difficult to crank, didn't put out a lot of pepper, and left a pepper ring wherever you left it. I bought this yesterday, and I love it. It's smooth and quickly puts out a lot of pepper, and you can adjust the grind with a switch. It sitst upside down, so no pepper trail is left behind. It's great. see less

My experience has been this thing is AMAZING at retaining heat. I brewed two large coffee presses of coffee one evening, put the coffee in the carafe and put it in the refrigerator. (This was to make iced coffee.) In the morning I poured some coffee and it was STILL WARM! Not hot, but lukewarm. I was totally shocked. That is after 10 hours in a 40-degree refrigerator. see less

I purchested this item 12/16 and conducted an experiment to see how this carafe retained heat.As per instructions, I filled it with boiling water to preheat the carafe. After waiting 8 minutes I poured out the Catalina carafe and poured in a full pot of brewed beverage from the coffee pot.The tempature of the carafe at that point was 180 degrees.After two hours the temp of the crafe was 167 degrees.After 5 additional hours,the temperature of the carafe was 128 degrees.It lost about 7 degrees an hour. This Catalina carafe exceeded my expetations in heat retention. see less

This burner has been great for travel. The whole thing does stay hot, but the rubber feet allow you to set it almost anywhere. It does take a while to warm up, but it's faster than cooking over a campfire. No wood or matches necessary :). We have used it in a hotel room (which we werent suppose to do. sshhhh!) and in our church room we are borrowing for after church. it takes about 15 minutes from cold burner to heat up 5 rosarita cans of beans to fully hot, cooking on high. We only use this on high, unless we are heating up tortillas directly on it. We really like it! I can understand complaints if you were trying to use it every meal every day to eat on. But for traveling, if you have done much like we have, then I would definitely recommend it. I just pick it up after use and stick it up on the top shelf of the hotel closet to cool, or somewhere out of the way. If you want something sturdier, save up for something that costs more! see less

Mine has now died but it has been maybe three years. I do not have a stove so this was it for burners. That means I made hot water, fried things, boiled things and even made jams and chutneys [which required hours at a time]. I gets hot enough but it does take longer than a more powerful burner does to get hot. Also the top was starting to look a bit rusty in places. Still it was a good run for the money. see less
