about this item

Celebrating the 100-year anniversary of Ireland’s Easter Rising, this handsomely illustrated reference gathers 42 biographies of men and women who played important roles in Ireland’s Easter Rising of 1916. The biographies are from the Royal Irish Academy’s Dictionary of Irish Biography and reveal their subjects’ personalities and relationships as well as political perspectives. The profiles describe 30 men and women who were Republican revolutionaries; the nine Republican women profiled were all associated with the Irish Citizen Army. The book also presents profiles of three nationalist leaders who opposed the Easter Rising, as well as six men who were part of the regime opposed by the Easter Rising. There are also profiles of two historians of the Rising who were eyewitnesses. An introduction offers an overview of 20th-century Irish political history, while an afterword looks at the post-Rising lives of some of those profiled. The book is illustrated with full-page, b&w scraperboard engravings, some in two-page spreads. All 42 of the book’s illustrations are by artist David Rooney; a brief note by the artist describes the scraperboard engraving process. The book is distributed in the US by ISBS.
