Q: What is the total interior space by height, meaning the maximum height per shelf if the shelves are centered in the unit. I have books I intend to store in these but they are 13" high so I would need enough room for this on both shelves.

A:Â When middle dividing shelf is centered there is 12" vertical clearance in both top and bottom sections, and it is adjustable to add more clearance. 13" books could fit upright in top or bottom section, but not both sections simultaneously.

A:Â 13" books would fit - but there IS a 1" lip at the top of each shelf ... so you would not be able to put the books on the shelf standing straigt upright, you will have to put them in at an angle and then straighten them up (so there will be space left over on each shelf).

A:Â The interior height of the shelf space is 14 inches with the shelf centered. If your books are 13 inches tall, they will fit but the top 1 inch or so will be covered by a small, front-facing piece of wood that would also prevent the book from being placed/removed on/from the shelf without turning it sideways it little bit.

A:Â The opening is <13" (about 12 1/2 inch) but if you tilted the 13inch book it would fit within the shelf which is about 13 1/2 inches. There is just a little lip in the top and bottom of the opening of the shelf itself.

A:Â The middle shelf itself is about 3/4 to 1 inch but there is an approx 2 inch piece of wood at the front of the bookshelf for a lip to keep items in. There is also an approx 2 1/2 inch piece of wood attached to the bottom piece but it is flush and does not provide a lip for the bottom.

A:Â There are no holes for wiring but it would be easy to make holes. I have been using these bookcases open-back for about 2 years. I did not apply the back panels. This allows for cord/wire routing, it looks nice and has held up well.

A:Â It is not pure flat white, there is a very subtle grain to it. It is hardly noticable. I had to go and take a hard look at it just now. If you want a formica like finish this is not for you. I have bought many of these over the years for my clients and they are always very pleased. The quality is great for the price.

We were really excited about this bookshelf for our daughters room. But all of the pre-drilled holes were uneven so my husband had to drill his own holes and the quality is very poor so now there are visible holes on the outside that look terrible. The top is extremely crooked too from the holes being uneven. He tried to make them as even as possible without it falling apart. We are very disappointed because now that it is assembled, it is too difficult to return. Please do better on your quality checks, Target.

Beautiful little bookshelf, I did end up having to order a new one because the top piece was slightly crushed. I wish you could order just one replacement piece but you have to order an entire new bookshelf just to get the one piece you need. That said, it was easy and straightforward to assemble and feels very sturdy. I love that it has a couple of added details, like the added ledge on the adjustable shelf for visual thickness and the molding piece just under the top. Very nice for the price.

I was disappointed with this bookcase. some of the holes were to big or small. Some of the parts did not fit correctly. The right upper corner is slightly chipped. It took me over 3 hours to put together. I still kept it. I purchased a white one just like this one in 2013 and it was very easy to put together. Just disappointed.

Though well-engineered with precise construction, the assembly instruction is, unfortunately, written for engineers rather than ordinary consumers. Without clear orientation labeling of which pieces going to which pieces' edges and sides, It's easy to assume incorrectly and assemble with wrong orientations. Taking apart for reassembly can be also equally challenging and time consuming. It requires at least an hour (or two) to assemble correctly. I took 3 different steps apart to reassemble due to wrong orientation. I can see some consumers may become frustrated and return this product.

Could Be A 5-Star Bookcase

I like this bookcase a lot, but I'm disappointed it arrived with damage to the back corner of the top shelf. After 90 minutes of assembly, taking it apart and returning it seems like too much hassle. I read the other reviews that mentioned receiving damaged bookcases, but I decided to order it anyway, so I'll just put a book over the chip, I guess. If in perfect condition, I think it's worth $100 and 5 stars. It's sturdy, good-looking, and easy to assemble. (It definitely looks a lot better than the cheaper, flimsy bookcases I've purchased over the years.) Perhaps the price should be lower with so many apparently damaged during shipping, though. Overall, I'm more satisfied with the purchase than regretful. The Espresso color is dark like I wanted, fits my space perfectly, and holds lots of books, decor, etc.

I was almost done assembling this when I noticed the top of the bookcase arrived cracked and is unusable. There is a big crack that went through almost the entire board and a smaller one as well. I'm really disappointed and am going to return it.

Poor Quality Control

I bought this at full price to match one I bought years ago - new in box at a second hand store. The old one has some scratches but has held up nicely so I wanted to buy a new one to match it. It arrived today and over half of the pieces had defects - significant scratches, dark stain spots, glue buildup, etc. I didn't feel like returning it so I started assembling it. I made it halfway through before finding that the entire left side was improperly prepped for screws (half of the holes were so large that the cam screws fell through) so I had to stop assembling it. In the 20 minutes I worked on it, the odor and dust coming off of it gave me a headache and sore throat. My hands were also black with dirt that came off of it. It will be returned immediately.

I bought 2 of these bookcases in 2017, have moved 4 times and they've held up perfectly. They were simple to assemble and look more expensive than they were. Love them so much, I just ordered a 3rd one!
