About this item

The author uses a transnational history approach to analyze the economic growth and modernization of Ivory Coast from the 1950s to the 1980s, considering both local and global forces, including the involvement of France and the US in its development and the roles of hydroelectric projects and the sugar, coffee, and cocoa industries in the country's boom and bust. He considers attempts by France in collaborating with or sabotaging the US in its development projects; how the Ivorian elite reacted to their involvement as providers of developmental assistance; whether they had their own alternative ways of development; the input of the people involved in modernization projects; and how the Ivorian people who were supposed to receive benefits of development negotiated the regime of discipline. He discusses the period between 1946 and 1960 and the importance of the African-led cash-crop revolution, the postwar modernization drive, and the influence of American modernization theory; changes that followed independence proclamations in the 1960s, including the difficulty of leaders in overcoming the legacy of late colonialism and the appeal of postwar modernization theory, as well as specific development projects; and the 1970s, when signs of problems emerged during the oil shocks and recession of the decade, and the collapse of the economic “miracle.” Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
