About this item

Since the 1988 Supreme Court ruling R. v. Morgentaler, which struck down the section of the Criminal Code that restricted legal abortions to those approved by a panel of physicians, says Johnstone, Canada has had no law governing abortion. She explains that the ruling did not establish a legal right entitling women access to abortion services, only struck down the existing law on the grounds that it violated women's rights. It also emphasized the role of Parliament in legislating abortion, but no new law has successfully passed in Canada, making abortion a matter of health care that falls under provincial and territorial jurisdiction. She traces the history and describes the current situation. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
