about this item

The author spoke with LGBTQ teens and teachers and guidance counselors at seven schools in Toronto, Canada, and elsewhere about how to help these students feel welcome, included, and safe in schools, focusing on how the culture of schools allows for bullying, shifting from the view of bullying as a psychological problem to questioning the sociocultural processes of normalization and the structures of power underlying them. The book aims to understand their daily experiences to illustrate the social setting that creates bullying, harassment, and exclusion and how cultural norms interact with the law and official policies in schools to influence student behaviors and attitudes. It describes LGBTQ students’ views on safety and how it needs to be broadened to include measures that promote equity and inclusiveness; their views about homophobia, heterosexism, and heteronormativity in the context of inclusion and equity; and the rules that govern school culture, including the anti-snitch culture, religious beliefs and practices that influence students and parents, and internalized gender codes, and their role in developing new approaches to school safety. Each chapter ends with bullet points about what needs to be done. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (
