I very rarely go out of my way to write reviews, especially negative or mediocre ones, but I felt really compelled to share my experience.
We LOVE open ended, creative play and I had such high hopes for this play set. Just opening the box I was immediately taken by how light and unsubstantial the structural rods are. This concern was reiterated when, during the construction, the pieces didn’t soundly lock into place and were easily dislodged.
What was most frustration was the laughably inadequate assembly directions. When I constructed the ship (which I did myself as a college educated, career professional in my 30s) I had to retrace my steps at least 3 times because:
1- the rod colors are incredibly difficult to distinguish in the comically small diagram
2- there is just enough inset detail on orienting the connectors that I audibly questioned if the vendor was trying to be cruel and ironic
3- there is zero - repeat NADA - direction AT ALL on how to attach the cover, which TIES on. Seriously? For this much money, you couldn’t find a better way to attach the PRIMARY SELLING POINT? After walking around, staring at the box, walking around some more, quietly mumbling to myself, and a few stabs in the dark, I finallt attached it after 2 wrong attempts.
Assembly literally made me feel like I was competing in a puzzle challenge on an episode of survivor. Thank goodness I wasn’t. I would have been voted off the island.
After putting it together, I was already listing which of my children’s friends would not be allowed to play in it because they would destroy it. If you want to use it more than once, this wouldn’t be appropriate for more than 2 well-behaved kids. Max.
In all seriousness, this is a super cute and awesome idea but somewhere along the line someone traded in quality for quantity.
For the money, I had MUCH higher expectations. The good news is that with some rod beefing, serious re-structuring of the assembly instructions (I mean - come on! Splurge and add, like, another 2 steps and maybe a third page!), better distinguishing rod colors, and more ergonomic cover connectors, this thing could be well worth the money AND I would easily buy add-on kits and other covers.
As is, save your money NOW and wait for the manufacturer to improve the product. If you got it as a gift, fret not. It’s pretty cool if you didn’t pay for it.
A+ for concept. Maybe C- for execution. Not worth the money.
