Artful Immorality - Variants of Cynicism : Machiavelli, Gracián, Diderot, Nietzsche (Hardcover) (D.
about this item
Mayfield examines texts that he characterizes as among the highlights of Western literature since the Renaissance and as prime examples of cynicism. He begins by reviewing cynicism in antiquity, then offers close readings of elegant expedience in Machiavelli's Il Principe (~1513), acute concinnity in Gracián's Orá****** manuel y arte de prudencia (1647), a "Diogenes redivivus" in Diderot's Le Neveu de Rameau (~1774/1805/1891), and beyond morality or cynicism in Nietzsche's Nachgelassene Fragmente (1884-89). He concludes by exploring morality's contingency. The study served as his doctoral dissertation at Freie Universität Berlin in September 2013.
