About the Book

What makes 2nd Lieutenant Phil Larimore's story special is what happened in World War II's closing days and the people, and horses, he interacted with in this Forrest Gump-like tale that is emotional, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

Book Synopsis

What makes 2nd Lieutenant Phil Larimore's story special is what happened in World War II's closing days and the people--and horses--he interacted with in this Forrest Gump-like tale that is emotional, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

Growing up in the 1930s in Memphis, Tennessee, Phil Larimore is the ultimate Boy Scout--able to read maps, put a compass to good use, and traverse wild swamps and desolate canyons. His other great skill is riding horses.

Phil does poorly in school, however, leading his parents send to him to a military academy. After Pearl Harbor, Phil realizes he is destined for war. Three weeks before his eighteenth birthday, he becomes the youngest candidate to ever graduate from Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Landing on the Anzio beachhead in February 1944, Phil is put in charge of an Ammunition Pioneer Platoon in the 3rd Infantry Division. Their job: deliver ammunition to the frontline foxholes--a dangerous assignment involving regular forays into No Man's Land.

As Phil fights his way up the Italian boot, into Southern France and across the Rhine River into Germany, he is caught up in some of the most intense combat ever. But it's what happens in the final stages of the war and his homecoming that makes Phil's story incredibly special and heartwarming.

An emotional tale of courage, daring, and heroism, At First Light will remind you of the indomitable human spirit that lives in all of us.

Review Quotes

"At First Light is an amazing story of a remarkable young infantry officer. Phil Larimore embodies all the attributes we associate with 'Duty, Honor, Country.' I was extremely impressed that such a young officer commanded with bravery and courage beyond his years. Phil Larimore's courageousness is only surpassed by his extraordinary selflessness and concern for his troops. This book is a must-read so that we never forget the sacrifices of this greatest generation."--Gen. Gary Luck, U.S. Army (Ret.) four-star general and former Commander of CFC/UNC/USFK in South Korea (1993-1996)

"At First Light is one of the most fascinating stories of World War II I have ever read. If you love history like I do, this book is a must-read. Near the end of the war, a courageous young US Army officer, Phil Larimore, is given an almost impossible clandestine mission--to find Hitler's hidden Lipizzaners so they can be saved. Don't miss this heartwarming true story of a great American hero."--Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin, U.S. Army (Ret.) three-star general, Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence under President George W. Bush and former commander Delta Force and U.S. Army Special Operations Command

"As a graduate of West Point, an Army officer for five years, and the head men's basketball coach at my alma mater and at Duke for the past forty-six seasons, I've been blessed to be a part of great teams. I recognize the commitment and discipline required to win at the highest level. These experiences leave me in awe of Phil Larimore and his servant leadership, sensational suffering, and stoic sacrifice. What a fantastic story about a leader whose courage on the battlefield deserves a standing ovation. I highly recommend At First Light."--Mike Krzyzewski, Head Men's Basketball Coach at Duke University and Naismith Hall of Fame member

"As the author of fifteen novels set in World War II, I'm always drawn to a great story from a fascinating time in history. At First Light does not disappoint. The pages turned quickly in this compelling story about a brave man, Philip Larimore."--Tricia Goyer, author of "Dawn of a Thousand Nights" and "Songbird Under a German Moon"

"As the son and nephew of several World War II veterans, I never grow tired of reading about their heroics. The story of Phil Larimore is the most compelling and riveting of them all. At a time when we need real heroes more than ever, this story should inspire, bless, and encourage every American."--Cal Thomas, nationally syndicated columnist

"I have been fighting our nation's battles for most of my life, and that's what made At First Light such an absorbing read for me. Walt Larimore's meticulous research brings his father back to life and personally speaks of combat fortitude, unimaginable courage, and front-line action to me. This story is one you cannot afford to miss."--Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody, U.S. Army (Ret.) and the first woman in U.S. military history to achieve a four-star officer rank and to command a battalion in the 82nd Airborne Division

"I spent the majority of my life fighting battles on the football field--thirty years in the National Football League, nine Super Bowls, and legendary classics like the famous 'Ice Bowl.' I've told my 'war stories' from the NFL for years, but none of my tales come close to the captivating story shared by Walt Larimore in At First Light, a war story about his father who fought to protect the very freedoms you and I enjoy in this country we love."--Dan Reeves, Super Bowl Champion and record-setting NFL player and coach

"It's said that 2nd lieutenants in World War II had one of the shortest lifespans of anyone entering combat. And no wonder: They could not cower in a foxhole waiting for someone else to lead the way, to get up and walk into enemy fire. No matter how exhausted or frightened they were, they could not shirk their duty of being an example for their men (boys, really). Usually only in their early- to mid-twenties, they shouldered responsibilities that would have overwhelmed older men. The combat experiences of Phil Larimore, as captured by his son in this terrific and inspirational book, are a testament to the grit and fortitude of a generation who really knew the meaning of duty and personal sacrifice for the greater good."--Flint Whitlock, former U.S. Army captain, and editor of WWII Quarterly magazine

"The children of America's wounded warriors share a special bond. We know firsthand what that red stripe in Old Glory means and respect every bloodstained story of valor behind it. Whether or not you come from a patriotic home, Walt Larimore's masterful and moving account of his father's sacrifice in World War II will make you proud to be an American."--Tara McClary Reeves, daughter of Vietnam War hero Clebe McClary and author of "Is Your Dad a Pirate?"

"This story is extraordinary: an almost forgotten hero, tough combat, tragic sacrifice, gripping aftermath, a marvelous horse, and an astonishing ending. Don't miss reading remarkable book. At First Light is a way for you to join me in remembering and honoring the story of our World War II heroes, those selfless Americans who put it all on the line downrange, day after difficult day, in crushing heat and numbing cold, in the toughest conditions, against the most challenging, resilient, often barbaric enemy to liberate Europe and to help safeguard our freedom and liberty here at home."--Gen. David H. Petraeus, U.S. Army (Ret.) four-star general, former Director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, and former Commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan

I read the first part of this book as quickly as I could, wondering if officer Phil Larimore would survive WWII. After the war, Phil fought a personal battle to stay in the Army with the help of a wonderful horse he'd saved overseas.

As a 30yr military veteran, I have met many remarkable people and had a chance to tread the hallowed grounds across Europe, where our soldiers bled and lost their lives. Larimore’s book brings alive one exceptional soldier’s captivating and grueling narrative battling for 100’s of days on the forgotten front. His heroic exploits and oft neglected achievements, as well as the challenges he faced on a daily basis are brought to life in a riveting narrative. It doesn’t just stop at the wars end but charts the recovery and rehabilitation back to a peace time life, for what most would consider a spent wartime casualty, an invalid with PTSD. It is a story of bravery, crushed dreams, hope and redemption. Hard to put down! You won’t be disappointed.

A lot of people describe one book or another as being a “page turner.” “At First Light” epitomizes this epithet. Fortunately for me, I did not have to worry about being interrupted. I listened to George Guidall’s excellent narration of it on a long road trip. Larimore and Yorkey have crafted a compelling tale with language befitting Phil Larimore’s heroic history. Having served with some of America’s modern military heroes, I found that the details and the dialogue drew me in and made me feel like I was in the middle of the story, able to sense his trauma and his triumph. This book should be on every Chief of Staff’s recommended reading list.

Excellent view of war time and the effect it had on the American families. Having lived during this period it brought back the sadness of seeing the Military cars delivering the dreaded telegrams and the effect it had on the families. Also remember the day it all ended hearing the Church Bells, Car horns, and Sirens announcing our family members would be coming home. Many families paid the heavy price of Freedom as is expressed so vivid in the book. Passed my copy of the book on to my Grandson and he thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Great book!!

I was drawn to this book because my father was a medic in WWII. It was more personal because the main character Phil Larimore served in the same locations my father talked about being located. Like a lot of veterans from that era, my father did not talk about his experiences very much. The graphic descriptions of the battles and the situations faced were quite emotional for me to read. I feel a deeper level of understanding for the sacrifices made by these brave men and women. I felt like I was with him as he was thrown into “kill or be Killed” situations. I read it over the Memorial Day weekend. This story made for the most memorable recognition of any Memorial Day I can remember.

There have been many books written about World War II but few that tell the story of the 3rd Infantry Division. This is an amazingly detailed book about a true hero, Phil Larimore (the author's father), who became an army officer before he turned 18! At First Light is a great ride along a military front that extends from Southern Italy, across France and into Germany. I loved it!

This is one of those books to be read, marveled over, and then purchased to give away as gifts especially to the men in your life. It is the true account of the bravery of Phil Larimore and his experiences in WW2 and of a very special horse. There are pages of recommendations from military people who praise this man and this story. Walt has done a remarkable job of introducing us to his father, a man who never spoke about his past until close to the end of his life. What a gift that the author was able to capture these stories before his father passed away and then put pen to paper to share with us.

A compelling true story that reveals the deep character of a war hero

“At First Light” was a compelling read for me. I always gain deeper understanding of history when events are relayed in the context of a story, and the author does this superbly. I was immediately drawn into this true story of Phil Larimore’s life and developed a deep respect for him – and for all wartime veterans. I learned about aspects of WWII that were never covered in history class. I found myself holding my breath during tense skirmishes, shedding tears for lost friends and saved horses, and cheering for victories and times of rest and recuperation. I am a nurse, and I pictured myself caring for wounded soldiers in that setting and wondered if I would be able to serve them as well as the nurses that were portrayed in the book. I took the time for some introspection because this book challenged me to become more selfless. “At First Light” is both a banner to help us never forget those who served, as well as a call to take a step towards developing the deep character seen in “the Greatest Generation.”

As a son of a WWII veteran, who loves to read about WWII history, I knew I had to read at First Light by Walt Larimore. It is the unbelievable try story of the experiences of the youngest officer to ever graduate from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Phil Larimore. Walt Larimore’s real-life writing style entices you to experience his father’s next exploit, his next leadership decision, his next battle, his next mission. He befriended and fought beside the famous, General Truscott and Audie Murphy, and countless other citizen soldiers. He played bridge with General Eisenhower. He was on a first name basis with President Truman during is time riding his beloved horse, Chug, with the honor guard at Arlington Cemetery. Yet he was humble and like many others of the greatest generation rarely talked of his WWII experiences. Dr. Larimore’s research and vivid writing makes his father’s story leap off the pages becoming alive for the reader. After reading at First Light, I feel I know Captain Larimore. Lest we forget them, this is a must read for everyone who loves adventure and WWII history.

Walt Larimore and Mike Yorkey’s "At First Light" is the saga of Larimore's father’s unending bravery in the U.S. Army during WW ll. Despite being the youngest commissioned officer in the war, Phil Larimore immediately develops into the quintessential soldier: just as good at following as leading. Everyone around him recognizes that he is comprised wholly of tenacity. A play-by-play of Phil’s training and combat exploits brings us to the front lines with its challenges, accomplishments, horror, death, and cold (literally) harsh realities of war. Phil performed his mission of delivering ammunition to the troops through seemingly insurmountable obstacles, earning decoration after decoration, and probably more important to him, the respect of his troops. They would have followed him to the ends of the earth, and they did just that, time after time. As we see Phil lead his troops through Italy, France, and Germany, we get a history lesson and a reminder of true American heroes. We get to know the characters, complete with photos, including the animals in Phil’s world. He trains mules to get supplies and equipment to the front lines. He was also highly skilled with horses, but his love for them is what gets him through hard times, even after the war. The usually stark WW II story is humanized by this unequivocal expertise, and his romantic joys and heartbreaks. Through years of research the author discovered that distinct part of life so many of our fathers and grandfathers couldn’t share. Never before has a book moved me to tears, out of pride—for 2nd Lieutenant Phil Larimore’s legacy, and my own humble service in the U.S. Army.

I’ve enjoyed other books by Walt Larimore. At First Light is a wonderful, touching tribute to Walt’s father and his heroic adventures throughout a miserable war. I don’t read many “war stories”…but this kept my interest with the touching personal stories of his father’s romance and his love for horses. It’s unbelievable how many times he risked his own life for the sake of his troops..A true hero ..this captivated my interest to where I couldn’t put it down. I appreciated the accuracy and I highly recommend this book.

This book reads like “Huckleberry Finn Goes to War,” except the adventures are true, not fiction. As an 18-year-old 2nd lieutenant, he lands at Anzio, fights his way up the Italian boot, crosses occupied France and enters Germany. Along the way he earns most of the army’s combat metals, meets Audie Murphy, and goes behind enemy lines on a secret mission just declassified in this book. He loses a leg four weeks before Germany surrenders. He serves at Arlington National Cemetery while appealing his discharge due to disability. There he meets President Truman, General Eisenhower, Winston Churchill, and others. The final decision goes against him. You will have to read the book to find out how he saves the Lipizzaner horses and how a horse saves him.

This well researched book focuses on one of the major European campaigns of WWII depicted through the life of one of the youngest and most decorated Army officers in the war. Following Phil Larimore from his childhood through his intense WWII experience gives us a sense of how real the struggle for freedom was and how much the men and women of that war sacrificed so we can enjoy our lives in America today. The story flows well, and because of its meaningful and realistic intensity, draws the reader in to seek a resolution in the experience of this heroic figure. I commend the authors on an enjoyable, impactful account of a valiant soldier whose part in the war, along with the parts of thousands of others, led to something much greater than their sum.

Walt Larimore has done it again! At First Light: A True World War II Story of a Hero, His Bravery, and an Amazing Horse is an absolutely riveting book that I could not put down. I have to admit that initially I was not thrilled at the prospect of reading a long war story - those have never been my favorite reads. But the book was a gift and Walt Larimore is one of my favorite authors, so I took the challenge. Boy, I'm so glad I did. What a compelling story - inspirational, heartwarming, and very educational - made me proud to be an American. The hero's romances were woven throughout the book and kept me guessing, leading to a wonderful surprise ending. The story of his amazing horse made me cry more than once. All the time I'm thinking what an absolutely phenomenal movie this story would make - I hope I live to see that become a reality. I plan to donate a copy of this amazing book to my local public library.

The conditions they had to cope with and length of deployment were extreme to say the least. This man lead from the front and earned the respect of his men and me. Seriously choked me up to read about the auction. Absolutely worth the read!

I am not a military history buff, but this extraordinary book is so personal and engaging that I was totally engrossed in it. I was moved and inspired by Phil Larimore’s courage, sacrifice, selflessness and perseverance as he served our country. Clearly written and easy to follow, the story almost reads like a work of fiction, but his experiences and acts of bravery are well documented through letters, photographs, records and newspaper clippings. This book is an important reminder of the cost of freedom, leaving me filled with gratitude for this exceptional hero and all soldiers who put their lives on the line.
