Q: Is this product reef friendly

submitted by Karl - 3 years ago
  • A: Does it have non-nano particles or not? Customers should look for products that say "non-nano".

submitted byMR - 3 years ago
  • A: This is such an important question to ask. "Reef-safe" has no federal definition or regulation in the United States at this time, which unfortunately means that consumers must go the extra mile to make responsible decisions and check labels. In terms of reef-damaging ingredients, it appears the biggest offenders are oxybenzone and octinoxate, neither of which are present in Aveeno Mineral Sensitive Skin Sunscreen at the time of writing (May 2020). I believe this product is acceptable. A little more on oxybenzone and octinoxate: a 2016 study at Haereticus Environmental Laboratory in Clifford, VA, published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal "Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology," found that oxybenzone and octinoxate stunt the growth of baby coral, and were toxic to all seven coral species they tested (Downs, C. A. et al. Arch. Environ. Contam. Toxicol. 70, 265–288 (2016)). Although it did not isolate specific ingredients, a peer-reviewed study from Polytechnic University of Marche in Italy previously confirmed in 2008 that exposure to commercial sunscreen causes coral bleaching by leaving the reefs vulnerable to viral infections (Danovaro, R. et al. Environ. Health Perspect. 116, 441–447 (2008)). The consensus among the scientific community seems to be that further study is needed; however, the question is not IF sunscreen chemicals are dangerous, but rather whether their concentration in the oceans is great enough to do harm. The active ingredient in Aveeno Mineral Sensitive Skin Sunscreen - SPF 50 is zinc oxide. Zinc oxide, a mineral, is currently encouraged as an alternative to chemical-based sunscreens, as it has not been demonstrated to cause any harm to reefs. Therefore, I would say this specific product is "reef-safe" in the spirit of your question. Other active ingredients may be dangerous to reefs as well, not just oxybenzone and octinoxate, so I would encourage anyone interested to use the internet to find a full, current list - the information could easily change after this answer is posted. Sunscreen chemicals are only one of many dangers facing our world's coral reefs; however, this is one issue which everyday people have the power to prevent. Good looking out! Have a great summer and stay safe.

submitted bySunshine - 3 years ago
  • A: Hey Karl! There's lots of confusion about "reef safe," which actually isn't a regulated or official term! In fact, there's no credible evidence that any sunscreen ingredient is harmful to coral reefs. We use a variety of UV filters so that you can choose the sunscreen you prefer, confident that it's going to give you great UV protection, will keep your skin healthy, and is safe for the environment. Have a great day!

Q: What is the difference between this and the Aveeno Mineral sensitive broad spectrum sunscreen for faces? ingredients appear exactly the same...

submitted by Debbie - 3 years ago
  • A: there's prob very little difference in formulas they just have to fill out a "Full line" of "New products" to trick us

submitted byJo - 2 years ago
  • A: Hey Debbie! The Aveeno Positively Mineral Sunscreen Sensitive Skin for Face SPF 50 is non-comedogenic (won't clog your pores) and has a more lightweight formula that's great for under makeup. It also contains the added benefit of Vitamin E, which the version for the body does not. Hope this helps, have a great day!

Q: What is the difference between this product and the aveeno protect+hydrate sunscreen product? Also, are both sunscreen chemical or physical sunscreen?

submitted by Aveeno - 1 year ago
  • A: Thanks for the question! The main difference between these two are, The Protect + Hydrate is a chemcial sunscreen while the Positively Mineral is a mineral (physical) sunscreen. The Protect + Hydrate also has prebiotic oat in it which helps provide all-day hydration for your skin! Both sunscreens are Oxybenzone, oil and dye free. The Positively Mineral is also fragrance, paraben and phthalate free for sensitive skin.

Q: Is it non-nano particles or not? Customers should look for products that say "non-nano".

submitted by MR - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi there. This product does contain zinc oxide, which we believe does not fall under the FDA’s guideline defining nanotechnology. However, we know that because there is no global definition, some people still consider these materials to be nanoparticles. We include these ingredients to provide broad spectrum UV protection that can help prevent sun damage and minimize whiteness on the skin. Rest assured, extensive scientific evaluations of these ingredients in sunscreens have shown that they do not penetrate human skin and the FDA agrees that these ingredients are safe.

Q: What is the difference in the ingredients between this sunscreen and the baby sensitive skin sunscreen? Thanks

Q: Is this sunscreen coral safe?

submitted by Viktorija - 3 years ago
  • A: Our priority is providing safe and effective sunscreens for both our consumers and our environment. The study that was conducted on the effect of oxybenzone in sunscreen on coral was based on studies that were done in labs and used conditions that didn’t reflect the true ecosystem of a coral reef. We adhere to a strict safety assurance process for every product we make. You can find more information on our website.

i bought positively mineral instead of my usual positively radiant because they were out. MAN that was a mistake. i used it once and will never use it again. it was so thick it took 15 minutes just for the whiteness to go away no matter how much i rubbed it in. it made my skin turn so red when i put it on and mixed with the white residue it looked purple which was alarming. it felt sticky and thick all day. 0/5

One thing that’s good about this is that it doesn’t upset my sensitive, eczema and acne prone skin. But that’s not enough for me to like this. I used the two finger method to ensure that I was putting enough on my face. It made my face really white and wouldn’t blend in much but I was just going to be out in the backyard anyway so I didn’t mind as long as it goes away after several minutes. But hours after, there was still white cast sitting on my face.

I like this sunscreen because it does not make my skin greasy. It leaves a little white cast on skin but not too bad as a mineral sunscreen. I would like less chemical ingredients but so far I am happy with my purchase.

Holy grail mineral 50

5 out of 5 stars
Jo - 1 year ago, Verified purchaser
This applies like clown makeup, but I so enjoy the smooth matte look once it's dried. I'm a shade fair, not ultra fair, and have no white cast. Use about a full finger amount for my face and neck. I spread it on with both palms and towel off my hands with a damp rag. Great as a base layer under makeup, and not as tacky as other formulas. Oil cleansing required but for me this isn't an extra step.

Obviously this is a mineral sunscreen and definitely leaves a white cast. I am very tanned medium brown so it leaves me looking purple. However, my skin was so sensitive to sun and other chemical sunscreens so this has saved me from photoallergic reactions. Weird complexion beats Having gross skin so I give it 4 stars.

This product can only be used by people with the skin tone of paper. The white caste left on skin in the whole aveeno positively mineral line is so bad. I have light skin and it leaves a white ashy/dry looking layer. On my husband, who has darker skin, this product shows up almost purple and doesn’t rub in at all (totally unusable). More than that, it has a really grainy texture that feels almost like sand in the product. This is easily the worst sunscreen I’ve ever used. Further I think companies need to push back against the idea that sunscreen is only for pale people, by making a more inclusive product that doesn’t leave a layer of white on the skin.

I really wanted this product to be the one. I don't mind the typical complaints such as the white cast or the thickness but I'm not too okay with the fact that it won't wash off. A lot of dimethicones in this product which i don't mind but leaves a coating on my skin that won't come off even with makeup remover or oil. Iv been patient in trying to make this work for me but at the end of the day, I don't want something that won't come off and cause build up or acne. Aveeno, is there any advice you might have please? :(
