Q: I'm confused. The brand expert says "There is a picture which shows a square of chocolate and below it says: 1 oz. square of chocolate", but the picture above says "4 pieces = 1 oz". Which is right?

submitted by tangerine - 3 months ago
  • A: Still confused. The picture doesn't show 1 square, it shows 4. It says 4 pieces = 1 oz., as does the product's website: "1 formerly wrapped square = 4 new Baker's pieces = 1 oz."

submitted bytangerine - 3 months ago
  • A: We apologize for the confusion. As a reference, on the back panel of our unsweetened, semi-sweet, white and bittersweet chocolates there is a picture which shows a square of chocolate and below it it says: 1 oz. square of chocolate. This 1 oz. square is equivalent to what a recipe might call "1 square of Baker's Chocolate."

Q: what is a square? my old recipe calls for 2 squares.

Q: Is this a 4 oz or 8 oz box? The picture and description says 8 but the title is 4 oz. very misleading!

submitted by Loz - 6 years ago
  • A: Target needs to change their pictures and description! In store, they only sell the 4oz bar, so I'm assuming that is what you would be purchasing here. Very misleading, though.

I usually get the more expensive brand that starts with a Gh..but needing to economize, i tried Bakers in my brownie recipe and it turned out delicious! Very easy to break, 4 of the little squares make one ounce, and melted deliciously with the butter. No complaints

Prices rise... packaging changes... given supply chain problems, rampant inflation, and environmental concerns we're lucky to have reasonably priced, 100% cacao at all.

It’s Not Baker’s Fault You Can’t Do Basic Math

5 out of 5 stars
Pastry Chef - 11 months ago

I’m absolutely shocked by the sheer number of people who are apparently incapable of basic multiplication, addition and division. And yes, the bars are smaller. Have you bothered to look at the worldwide price of cocoa? You folks must never use natural, pure vanilla if you’re complaining about how expensive 100% cacao is. Take a look at EVERY SINGLE OTHER BRAND of baking chocolate; you’ll see every company has reduced its package size. It’s not a “rip off.” It’s what the commodity costs now. Also, “unsweetened” means the bar is 100% cocoa solids/cacao - those complaining the percentage isn’t on the box and “bakers need to know” what percentage unsweetened chocolate is- are, clearly, not experienced bakers. Finally, if you bothered to read the site or the box, you’d see Baker’s tells you quite plainly how much each square weighs, and how many squares are in a package. So do your basic math. If you don’t know how many ounces your recipe calls for, well, that’s your fault, not Baker’s.

Love the chocolate, hate the packaging.

Like many, I've used Baker's chocolate (unsweetened) for years for recipes from my family. Sadly, the change in packaging has made using this product impossible for my mother, who originally introduced me to it. The bar is too hard to break, and she's reached a point where she can no longer break it on her own. Seeing her so upset that she can no longer surprise her kids or grandkids with her chocolate baked goods is heartbreaking. It's sad to see, and disappointing that the company doesn't care, despite numerous complaints from lifelong loyal customers. The original packaging was better. You get an extra star for the product, but lose all other stars due to not listening to your customers. You've lost this customer now, too.

Good chocolate - terrible repackaging - LISTEN!

I have been using Bakers Chocolate Unsweetened for years as my mother and grandmother did before me. I have recipes handed down as well as YOUR recipe book etc. Every single time I go to bake I get angry with you. This is unnecessary. You need to bring the old packaging back. By all means keep this if you want to but there is a consumer fury here. It is time. Saying you will tell the marketing group just doesn't cut it. How many times do you need to be told? I am trying other chocolate now. You need listen to your customers before it is too late. We all know why you did this. You need to hear loud and clear that we are willing to pay more for the convenient packaging we are used to. Rule ONE: Listen to your customers.

New packaging is a bad choice

The new easy break bar is not easy to break and makes it impossible to measure out 1 oz. The company claim that this is consumer driven and reduces waste is simply ludicrous. You have chosen to double the packaging on an easily recyclable cardboard box and paper wrapping. The conversion indicated on the box is confusing and misleading. I was just on the phone trying to explain how to convert a recipe for an elderly relative. Please admit your error and switch back to the old molds. I would be fine with four one ounce bars in a box. I understand costs go up but this is just aggravating.

Hate the little squares

You can't separate the squares. The bar is as hard as wood. If you try to cut it with a knife, break it by hand (impossible), saw it. Forget it. if it breaks at all, it it shatters. TERRIBLE!!!! The 4 oz. bar has 16 little squares but it breaks into crumbles.

So annoyed I have to google to convert my recipe

How ridiculous and deceptive of you to change your interior packaging. And now the new box doesn't even seem to have the conversion on it anymore, so I have to dig into google to find out how much chocolate my recipe that calls for "squares" needs. At least I remembered that there was a change, and so didn't ruin anything.
1 reply from Kraft Heinz Representative team - 2 years ago
Thanks for taking the time to share your comments with us. One reason for package changes is to consolidate and reduce packaging. We also change our packaging to bring quality products to our consumer’s at the most affordable price. We appreciate you sharing your concerns with us, and I will forward your comments to the marketing team.

Repackaged for half the amount

1 out of 5 stars
mulvamj - 2 years ago
originally posted on myfoodandfamily.com
For generations, my family has used Baker’s chocolate in our recipes. A couple years ago, you fooled us by keeping the same package size but including only half the amount of chocolate. Don’t tell me that we asked you to do this. And if your marketing people told you to do this, they should be fired. It’s deception. If prices increased, just increase the price of you product. I’m so disappointed. Also, please put a conversion factor on the packages, so we can convert between ounces, cups, and squared.
1 reply from Kraft Heinz Representative team - 2 years ago
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. On the back panel of our unsweetened, semi-sweet, white and bittersweet chocolates there is a picture which shows a square of chocolate and below it says: 1 oz. square of chocolate. So one package is one solid 4-ounce bar and 1 ounce would be 1/4 of the bar. Hope this helps.

Formerly Individually Wrapped Chocolate

3 out of 5 stars
kat24 - 2 years ago
originally posted on myfoodandfamily.com
I have a recipe from the 1970's - when this product used to be individually wrapped in the box. It was so easy to take out the amount needed for the recipe. Would you at least print the conversion on the box? Your website says that 4 squares of newer packaged product equals 1 square from the way it used to be packaged. I hope it does and that it will cut apart easily, as I'm making my dad's fudge recipe and really want it to have the right amount of chocolate in it......
